Hi there! I've used the beta file recently to get in contact with a few beta's. Unfortunately my search hasn't gone all too well. (Some accounts just don't exist anymore, which is to be expected with such a large file..) However, I'm encountering a lot of people who are not willing to beta for m/m and f/f pairings. Which is fine of course! But it would be helpful if it was included in the beta file as category: willing to beta; gen-f/m-f/f-m/m-other).. would this be possible? just an idea ofc ty

to be honest, adding such a question is opening the door to harassment (How dare you say you don't enjoy this or that, etc. Yes, it happens...).

We've however slightly edited the question to suggest Beta Volunteers mention that sort of thing if relevant.

Not every account that changed name or deleted warned us, sadly, but since we sometimes get asks to edit early entries, we're not deleting any ourselves, so this is why we have... legacy entries ;-)

Hey, I'm a little confused about the 'needabeta' concept? I thought this was service people where offering for free? or is this a paid service thing? (I've encountered the phrase commission in the beta file i.e. row 1297?) Can you clarify on this? Do I have to pay for a beta?

Thank you for your question!

We only provide a tool for Writers and Betas to get in touch, and do not control what Volunteers write in the form. We only edit an entry if asked by the Beta Volunteer.

That said, regarding your question specifically, this particular volunteer wrote that they also take commissions, which suggests they don't always do... but sometimes will. We're assuming they're talking Betaing and not fic commissions, here.

Here is what the FAQ says:

Should I pay my Beta? This blog is mostly geared towards fanworks, and while gifts can never go wrong and don’t have to be monetary it is, generally speaking, not considered something one pays for in fandom.  If you’re looking for professional editing, Needabeta is not the tool you need. See our more detailed answer here!

We at Needabeta see fandom as a non-commercial space, and do not promote monetisation in our space. We created Needabeta for free, and are managing it for free as well. We can only encourage writers to choose who to get in touch with according to the information provided by the Volunteer - fandoms, types of betaing, etc - and be clear about what you want.

Most, if not all, people on the Beta File will do it for free, as far as we know. This is the spirit of Needabeta. And if you want to sign up to be a Beta, you can fill in the Beta form!

uhh would it be okay if I could edit my socials (row 1302 moon_11.)? also there seems to be a glitch where my info is only presented in one line so like half of the sentence is cut off might just be for me though

Hello! The answers to your questions may be found in our FAQ, which is our pinned post! We have copied the answers below:

I need to modify my info on the Beta File / delete my info…

Send us an ask with two identifying elements: for instance, the row number, your fannish name used in the row… to make sure we modify the correct row!

Without two identifying elements, we will not make the modifications: we do not want to modify / delete the wrong row!

You can also choose to have it entirely deleted and then resubmit via the Beta Form if there are a lot of changes. This is fine :-)

Anon asks are replied to publicly on the blog (no other option!), and asks coming from a Tumblr blog get a private answer.

If you can’t send asks, then you can use the Submission form as a plan B!

Why can’t I edit my entry myself?

Because we know that it’s easy to mess up a spreadsheet, even when you know how to use one. However, we reply to asks very quickly!

I can’t see all the information in a cell!

That’s because there is a lot of information, in which case we change the formatting so it’s not making all the row unreadable.

The information is still in the cell, as long as you click on it.

Don't feel stupid! You are probably not the first person to wonder about this! It's just the name you use in fandom, and could be as simple as your Tumblr or AO3 user name.
