July 14 is International Non-Binary People’s Day! Today and during this week, we celebrate and uplift everyone who identifies as non-binary. Gender is a social construct and it exists beyond the binary of just man and woman/ boy and girl. We take this day to also shine a light on the fact that many countries still do not recognize non-binary as a gender identity and often have to live in unwelcome or unsafe environments centered around their gender. Even here in the US, gender nonconforming folx are forced to deal with IDs and legal documents that don’t match up to their identity. Take today and learn more about non-binary people. Be respectful of identities and pronouns. Choose to be an ally. #nonbinaryday #beyondthebinary https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf_5nBbg03v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Last batch of after graduation photos with the cap toss at the end. I am so grateful for all the support I had during this journey. I was never alone on this path and even when things got tough, I knew my family and friends had my back. 💜💜 I couldn’t have done this without that encouragement and help. #faugrad #fau22 #fauartsandletters #interdisciplinarystudiesinsocialsciences #sociology #magnacumlaude #collegeinmy40s #ididit #ihadsupport (at Florida Atlantic University) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdUYoQEtu0t/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When your classes are all done and you're graduating in 2 days and you just can’t help but do research in your field. A great read by Dr. April Baker-Bell (@dr.april__ ): “We Been Knowin: Toward an Antiracist Language & Literacy Education” challenges educators to look at how some language perpetuates racism while at the same time others can be a vehicle for dismantling the gatekeeping of liberated and historically white, educated, and articulate spaces. Justice and equality must be intersectional and all forms of oppression must be confronted and renounced. #alwaysreading #alwayslearning #liberationlanguageliteracy #sociology #socialscience #faustudent #antiblacklinguisticracism https://www.instagram.com/p/CdJgPTTphk0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

And... I’ve submitted my last final/assignment as an undergrad!! I’m not sure it’s caught up to me but if I get at least 70% on my final project I’ll be graduating with Honors. 👩🏻🎓🥳#FAU22 #floridaatlanticuniversity #fauartsandletters #interdisciplinarystudiesinsocialsciences #sociology #graduatingmagnacumlaude #lastfinal #collegeinmy40s https://www.instagram.com/p/CdHSyQrpb7v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My family and me, before, during, and after FAU’s Inaugural Induction Ceremony for the First-Gen Tri-Alpha Honor Society on Tuesday. I kept it together throughout but the moment that challenged the waterproof claim of my mascara was when they mentioned how behind all of us inductees were the people who believed in us along the way. 🥺 I couldn’t have gotten this far without the support of my family, friends, and other loved ones. I feel so fortunate for the people in my life. #triaphahonorsociety #trialphafau #firstgenerationfau #floridaatlanticuniversity #alphaalphaalphahonorsociety (at Florida Atlantic University) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcJ_UY7N1LN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Protect her ..periodt
We should start posting more banned history about the US. I know most people are unaware of the facts that aren’t taught and banned from the education system. All minority groups have had their fair share of oppression by the US and everyone should know.

you know what i love about valkyrie? she’s a woman and the narrative doesn’t hold a knife against her neck for it
that scene of her falling down drunk in her first appearance? amazing! that’s there for us to know she has a drinking problem, but don’t underestimate her because she will still get the job done. it’s not there to make us oogle her, it’s there to show us she is a person.
the weight of her survivor’s guilt and the ptsd and the questioning of her identity because everything that made her a valkyrie, a protector of the throne, a fearsome warrior in the ranks of other legendary women, was taken from her by the people she should never have had to fight
thor asks for her aid because she is a warrior and her reputation precedes her. he doesn’t needle her to join by invoking her gender, but rather her pride.
the things we associate more frequently with male characters like heavy drinking or physical strength are embodied in valkyrie, but it’s not there to make her ‘manly’ or Not Like Other Girls. in fact, it’s to remind us that these are things that can be true of women. women can be traumatized and turn to alcohol. they can isolate themselves and run away from their problems and want to punch their demons in the face. men don’t have a monopoly on compelling backstories!
valkyrie got everything that make men shine in the marvel franchise and it didn’t come at the expense of her gender or her race

“As the Bechdel Test began to creep into the sightline of mainstream movie criticism, it was notable to see the surprise of some male critics that their favorite movies—One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Goodfellas, The Princess Bride, Clerks, the original Star Wars trilogy, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, and even Tootsie, when you get right down to it—so soundly flunked it. For many women, the reaction was more of a shrug, along with relief that, finally, there was a simple way to help writers and directors step over an embarrassingly low baseline. To be clear, applying the rule isn’t about snatching away the well-earned status of Raging Bull or The Godfather or even This Is Spinal Tap. As Anita Sarkeesian, creator of the Web site Feminist Frequency, noted in a 2009 video about the rule, “It’s not even a sign of whether it’s a feminist movie, or whether it’s a good movie, just that there’s a female presence in it.” The latter point is something that many people fail to grasp when trying to explain away why their favorite movies don’t pass the test (“But Batman is the hero of the movie! Of course the women characters are going to talk about him!”): the Bechdel Test is not a judgment of quality or nuance. After all, the beautiful, moving Gravity fails the test, while a formulaic rom-com like 27 Dresses passes with no problem. But the test itself is a simple, bloodless assessment of whether female characters are deemed important to a story—and a way to conclude that, most of the time, they aren’t.”
— We Were Feminists Once: From Riot Grrrl to CoverGirl®, the Buying and Selling of a Political Movement (Zeisler, Andi)
