Things that I, a hard of hearing person with Asperger’s, say in conversation on a daily basis:
What?
What’s going on?
I don’t get it
Wait, what did he say before that?
Why are we all leaving? Where are we going?
What does [insert teenage slang here] mean?
Wait, why are you taking a picture of that?
*randomly leaves conversation when I get bored or think of something better to do*
Basically, I’m confused all of the time.

So I went to the doctor a few months back, asking for an ASD assessment. I was told that there was no NHS funding for this in my area, so I would be referred for a psych appointment for my anxiety instead. She also said that I probably wasn’t on the spectrum because I could look her in the eye, and am in a happy, long-term relationship.
Fast forward a couple of months and the day for my psych appointment arrives. Yep, with a professional psychiatrist - one whom you would think would be well trained. And what happens? When I mention suspecting that I have ASD and would like to have a proper assessment. He says that is impossible because if I was on the spectrum: a) I would have been diagnosed at about 4 years old (even though aspergers was barely recognised in 1981, when I was four - let alone in females) b) I wouldn’t be able to talk to my kids, and c) I wouldn’t have been able to look him in the eye.
Like, is this guy for real??? This is 2016 - and I live in London - a major world city. Surely he would have had access to some better training??
Of course, my verbal processing and communication skills being as shit as they are, I couldn’t think of a good way to respond in the moment - other than mention how eye contact can be learned, and that I know several autistic people who talk to their kids and their family.
Luckily I am seeing him again for a follow-up appointment in December, so maybe I’ll be better prepared this time. Although I am still a bit worried, because I’m so bad at thinking on the spot and at verbal communication.

an autism self-diagnosis masterpost
Here is an attempt at a great big list of self-diagnosis resources for people who think they might be autistic and want to know more. There are probably others, but hopefully this’ll be helpful to someone.
Wherever possible, I have tried to link to works by autistic people. This is because autistic people know how autism works much better than any allistic person can. So, if you’re wondering why so much of the list is blog posts instead of medical articles, that’s why. I do have some medical articles, which you can use at your discretion.
Finally, this is very much a work in progress, so please feel free to suggest things to add or change.
And I would like to extend a thousand thanks to mildlyautisticsuperdetectives for beta-ing this for me. Ne is amazing and you should totally check out nir blog.

So i was wondering, did you self-diagnose for autism, or did you go to a doctor? and if you did self diagnose, what symptoms did you see? I don't ask this to knock self-diagnosis, but because I think I may have autism, and I want to know what your experience was like, because I respect you a ton, and i would love to hear your advice
I self diagnosed in 2014 but it was kind of a messy experience so I am still not comfortable sharing my own symptoms right yet, I hope you understand. i’m happy you asked though because i would love to help pass on what helped me. It’s the tail-end of Autism Acceptance Month too, so I have a heck-ton of resources that may help you with self-diagnosis.
thatautismfeel’s resource page
DSM-5 autism spectrum checklist
neurowonderful’s resource page
bookhobbit’s self-dx masterpost
if you are dfab, this post is important (more in neurowonderful’s post)
a post to possibly help with any rising fits of panic
There is a LOT of information, these resources lead to other resources- please don’t try to sponge it all at once, take your time going through the motions. after going through these, its important to comb through your history, your childhood, interactions with people, the way you process things, what upsets you and why, etc.. the resources helped make sense of a lot of my life, down to the very way i think and interact with the world. i stopped emotionally abusing myself by a staggering amount.
the most important part about self-dx is that it can help you find ways to work with yourself, help yourself and become more understanding of your needs especially when you are unable to acquire medical support or professional help for any reason.
take it slowly, it’s a long process. a very long, gentle, patient process.
