there's an episode of malcolm in the middle where he just shuts up and stops complaining for awhile and it immediately starts to significantly improve his life but also it causes him an ulcer and by the end of the episode he is literally spitting up blood and i have always deeply and unshakably believed that is exactly how the situation would play out for me too

to every american on the left feeling like this is the end, i get it. but i think we have a chance here, and this is why:

american fascism is incredibly disorganized and genuinely stupid. the destruction being done by elon and doge is horrible but it is also (ironically) incredibly inefficient because this moron won't hire real auditors to go through government spending. ice raids are actively being prevented because activists have been able to inform communities before raids happen-ice is showing up to empty apartment buildings, people are not opening their doors because they have been made aware of their rights.

all of this is telling me that we have a chance. all we have to do is take advantage of the idiocy, of the disorganization. we must organize better. we must abandon ideological purity and focus on pure pragmatism: how do we help one another? how do we get by without government programs?

one of the first actions of the black panthers was to direct traffic at an intersection with a broken traffic light, one that people had been asking the government to fix. when the government will no longer grant social services, we should create our own. tell them, fine! we don't need you anyway, we just need each other.

these cuts in government programs are going to hurt people. but we have the capability to organize and get people the resources they need. i was a part of the college palestine protests, and at our encampment, people came together in a way i had never seen before. within a couple days we had tents full of food, blankets, medical supplies that had all been donated by people of the community. we had created a self-sustaining, peaceful community so quickly because we all understood that we were there for an important mission. because we all understood this was being done because we cared about others thousands of miles away. because humans are capable of good, and capable of good on a great scale. we can come together, and we can get so much done. it is possible.

learn your history guys. learn how americans (and people in other countries) have resisted their terrible governments. it has been done before and can be done again.

this does not have to be the end. we do not have to resign ourselves to a dystopian fascist surveillance state. there are many ways to fight back. and the leaders of this fascist movement are all fucking morons. we should be taking advantage of that.
