Blue Jay Continuing with my backyard theme, this Blue Jay has moulted his old head feathers and is waiting for the new ones to grow in. These birds and Cardinals are the only ones I know of that do this complete head moult all at once. It must be chilly on a cold day.Torbay, NL

Saturday afternoon in Trinity. — It would be hard to ask for better Labour Day Weekend weather — it’s been sunny and warm. There are unmistakable signs of fall creeping in though; the shadows are getting long, the goldenrod is in bloom and the air is full of fireweed seed. I’m not complaining— it’s all very beautiful.
