Summary

My Review

The early chapters are breathtaking in how sick Waylon is, being on the roller coaster ride of his life. He’s truly fucked up from what happened at Mount Massive, and his life is out of control.

It’s a shock when we meet the current day Eddie and see what a contrast he is from the terrifying boogeyman that haunts Waylon’s memory. This work takes its time and goes into great detail.

It was interesting to me to see how the characters so readily communicate their feelings and talk it out–an enviable skill. I loved the themes about healing, about accepting, not erasing the past, about finding solace and forgiveness in unexpected places, and the exhilarating but essential risk-taking of making yourself vulnerable. It seems to me that this work was of deep personal significance to the author, and we all know how pouring your soul into a work makes it stronger.

The author was subjected to a targeted harassment campaign when this work was first posted, withdrew for a couple of years, then returned to complete this work LIKE A FUCKING CHAMP. After a careful read of the whole work, I honestly don’t know what set off the thought police. This story is a fucking love letter to competent mental healthcare, seeking help, and taking your meds.  

Binding

A hopeful, uplifting story deserves a binding that hints at possibility and the sun coming out tomorrow, so I couldn’t resist using the sunny yellow orange book cloth and swirly paper. Endpapers are an institutional blue. Bookmark is spring green. All in all, very cheerful.

Orange is also a color that comes up in the story, so it fits pretty well.

Typesetting

In contrast to the sunny case, the title page uses a very heavy looking and weathered typeface, in keeping with the theme of the book: learning to live with the burdens and scars of your past.

It follows what’s becoming my “template” using Garamond.

As usual all of the available artwork that was made for the story is included in the book.

I havent thought about these two in so long!! I looked them up again on a whim a few days ago and mmmmmmmm. also TO BE WELL WAS PUT BACK UP AND I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT IT BEING FINISHED. Geezus. These also aren’t the best sketches, but Ive had really bad artblock lately so im trying to get through it. BUT I want to draw them more in the future and maybe I’ll color these. perhaps.
