The wait is over! I’ve subbed episode 7. Treat yourself.

Some notes from this episode:
The song used in Kenji’s cooking scene is Donguri korokoro (’rolling acorn’).  It’s a well-known children’s song.
Gift-giving in Japan is a complex social construct. When you give someone a gift or do a favour for them, you form a relationship called giri, which means the receiver is now obliged to return the favour.
Girl groups in Japan usually cater for the straight male gaze. Liking a girl group is therefore not considered “gay”.
Period dramas are briefly mentioned. What makes the scene even  funnier is how it kind of breaks the fourth wall because the actors of Shirou, Kenji and Kohinata-san are all period drama veterans.
City Hunter is an 80s action manga and Saeba Ryou is the protagonist. He’s a skilled gunman and ~mysterious~.
There is no verbal I love you culture, at least not on the scale you’re perhaps used to seeing on American tv. Older generations especially may find it embarrassing to talk about their feelings, which is why it isn’t that odd for Shirou to be surprised at her mum proclaiming her love in an earlier episode.
There’s a scene where I’ve translated Kenji’s line as You’re not fooling anyone, but what he really says is that Shirou is not being sunao. Sunao is a word that contains multitudes, but basically what it means is dropping your ego, being honest about your feelings, accepting your situation and not fighting back. Shirou not being sunao is an on-going theme in the story.

Howdy! I hope you’re all having a nice day! I’ve subbed episode 6, so here it is! This episode was quite comical and I tried to keep the tone funny, but there’s a visual joke I wasn’t able to translate, so the thing with the shirt is this: hedgehog is harinezumi in Japanese, but literally the word means needle rat (hari = needle, nezumi = rat).

Ahoy! I’ve subbed the first episode! You can get both the episode and the subtitle file on my Google Drive. I won’t be hosting the raws forever, so you’ll have to download them elsewhere once they’re gone.

Please don’t upload my subtitles onto streaming sites, thank you. Feel free to share this post instead.
I’ve chosen not to translate most Japanese culinary vocabulary because the English translations are awfully long and would make the subtitle unreadable, and if there’s one thing I’m particular about it’s keeping my subtitles simple.
Episode 2 airs on Friday, and I’ll start translating it next week. I could probably get a transcript out in a day or two, but like I said, I’m very particular about my subtitles not being too long, so it takes a while for me to time them. In the meantime, if you have anything to ask or comment on, my ask box is open!
Oh, and one more thing! The line Katsuo tataki is the best! should read Soup and katsuo tataki is the best!, but I can’t be bothered to upload a revised version at the moment, so I’m just stating it here haha.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

“Whenever the English say my name,” Grantaire mutters, “it always sounds like they’re asking me for permission to breathe. ‘Grant air’, they say. Lucky for them I am a magnanimous man.”

I’m studying Les Mis for my exams and I just realised that Enjolras has never denied Grantaire anything in the book. Grantaire asked to help, and Enjolras let him; Grantaire asked to sleep at the barricade, and Enjolras let him; Grantaire asked to die by his sideand Enjolras let him. I don’t know how to feel about this tbh
