Trope Talk: Immortal Husbands, 10 Great Tropes

(Because TOG2 comes out in 2 weeks and I’m EXCITED)

1. Meet Ugly: Met on opposite sides of the 1099 Siege of Jerusalem during The Crusades and murdered each other a lot.

2. Enemies to Lovers: After murdering each other a whole bunch, 900+ years later and they have an incredibly happy and healthy relationship together.

3. Battle Couple: As part of The Old Guard they have fought side by side together for centuries and have multiple teamwork moments when fighting together.

4. Un-Bury Your Gays: Due to their resurrecting abilities and healing factor, they constantly come back from the dead

5. Violently Protective Partners: Neither of them take it well when someone hurts or threatens the other (especially Joe after Keane shot Nicky, and Nicky sleeps with a gun in hand ready to protect Joe if they get ambushed)

Joe: You shot Nicky. You shouldn’t have done that. (Breaks Keane’s neck)

6. Old Married Couple: Although it’s unclear when exactly they got together, they were together long before they even met Andromache and Quynh. So at least 800+ years.

7. Big Damn Kiss; Joe gives an epic speech about his love for Nicky in an armoured van surrounded by armed guards and then the two kiss.

8. The Noodle Incident: What happened “that time in Malta”?

9. Eternal Love: Joe’s big speech about how much he adores Nicky and the fact they’ve been together for centuries. Here’s the big speech;

Joe [to a guard who mocked their relationship]: You’re a child. An infant. Your mocking is thus infantile. He’s not my boyfriend. This man means more to me than you can dream. He’s the moon when I’m lost in darkness and warmth when I shiver with cold and his kiss still thrills me even after a millennia. His heart overflows with the kindness of which this world is not worthy. I love this man beyond measure and reason. He’s not my boyfriend. He’s all and he’s more.

Nicky: You’re an incurable romantic.

10. The Power of Love: both are extremely motivated by their love for each other to protect and fight together. They also take out a bunch of armed guard (while handcuffed) who interrupted their kiss.

The Old Guard 2 runtime

IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Wikipedia, everywhere I can find lists it as either 1 hour 44 minutes or 1 hour 45 minutes.

This is similar to other action movie releases this year, it's not actually shorter than average, but it is saddening to see it's 20/21 minutes shorter than the first film. The character moments in the first one were so important, and it feels like there's so much that needs to happen in the second movie.

I would say, "Well they don't need to spend as much time on exposition this time," and that might be true, but it seems like Uma Thurman's character comes with a whole new set of lore to explain.

While I am disappointed, it's important to keep in mind that a lot of really good movies are around that runtime. Many filmmakers consider it an ideal runtime. The film editor, Matthew Schmidt, has won major awards for his previous work.

(Alright, to be uncoolly unpositive about a movie we haven't even seen yet, I'm sad. With 3 new major characters and less overall screentime, it's frustrating that we may not be getting more of the characters we actually care about. Okay. Negativity over.)
