Yet after all my task was not an easy one; often I would rather have pleased than teased him. My future husband was becoming to me my whole world; and more than the world: almost my hope of heaven. He stood between me and every thought of religion, as an eclipse intervenes between man and the broad sun. I could not, in those days, see God for His creature: of whom I had made an idol.

I think adding all the back story about Zuko, Iroh, Ozai & Azula in the first season was a mistake. All that time took away from the relationship building between Aang, Katara and Sokka. Their friendship was the pillar of the animated series, which was build up in season 1, the live action fell incredibly short on that. I also think it takes away from the story arc of Zuko and Iroh in season 2 & 3.
Might be controversial? But I’m not really liking live action Avatar: The Last Airbender. Obviously it’s better than what M Night Shalalamadingdong did, but it’s very mid.
It’s very fast paced. The relationships between the characters arent there.. the comedic relief has been taken out completely. It’s feels like they tried to cater to specifically towards adult. But the original show was such an success with children and adults because it combined a serious storyline with comedic relief. The live action just falls out very flat.
5/10 for me
Also I hated some of the plot changes 😫
Also also wasn’t aang supposed to learn how to waterbend this season?

This! It’s so fast paced. The characters ended up feeling very flat
I wanted to give the live action atla a fair shot but good god it’s such a slog to get through and I’ve only watched the first 2 episodes. The characters feel like set pieces and not living breathing people, they talk in sweeping general statements and platitudes. It feels like there is no heart which is such a bummer. They are trying to speed rush the connections which just doesn’t work there is a reason you need 18-22 episodes to tell a character driven story, 8 is simply not enough.

Okay I just finished episode 2 and something about the acting feels so weird but I can't place it. It's like none of the relationships feel established enough. These don't feel like family or friends, just a bunch of people reciting lines to each other. Everyone is putting on this voice/character and sometimes shots are so strangely cut or linger too long that you get a moment to remember they're acting. Honestly i feel like Zuko is the only one giving (except for when he yelled "He ran away!" the delivery on that one was hilarious).
And so far nothing feels earned, like people are talking about having hope now that the Avatar is here but Aang isn't doing a single thing, this boy has barely showed initiative. In fact he doesnt even joke around as much. He doesnt show stubbornness or fear. Im trying to approach this show as if ive never seen the original and questioning if I would be able to understand characterizations and Ive got nothing on Aang.
I'm trying not to comment on the actual content bc that's a whole different can of worms and mainly focus on the production but boy do I have thoughts...

Some positives:
I thought the casting was very well done… (although I’ve heard some stuff that the actor for Sokka isn’t actually native) and the costuming was amazing

🙃 Regular reminder that while Hozier has amazing love songs, he is ALSO very outspoken about his leftist politics, specifically anti-fascism, anti-racism, reproductive rights, Palestinian rights and more.
Take Me To Church and Foreigner’s God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church and the colonization of Ireland.
Moment’s Silence is about oral sex but it’s ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.
Nina Cried Power is an homage to various (mostly Black) civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.
Be criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.
Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism and about protest and resistance.
Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.
Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism and arms dealers prioritize short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%
Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.
If any of the above surprised you, please, please delve deeper into Hozier’s music, you’re missing such an important part of his work.
