This is a colorized version of my original black & white photo of Steve McQueen and a journalist at Sebring in 1970. Photo was taken a couple of days before the race. When I saw Steve I opened my mouth to ask if I could take his photo. However, what came out of my mouth was gobbledegook. I became tongue-tied at seeing this movie star and couldn’t speak straight. Steve just looked at me and said, “Okay, but don’t ask me to pose.”

Mario Andretti in his factory Ferrari 512S on the back airport straight at Sebring in 1970. Andretti and co-driver Arturo Merzario would lead for almost ten hours until the transmission packed it in. Mario would then be put into another team 512 to win the race ahead of the Porsche of Steve McQueen and Peter Revson.

Steve McQueen at Sebring in 1970. Steve and co-driver Peter Revson would go on to come in second at Sebring that year. Their 3-liter Porsche 908/02 actually led briefly very late in the race but Mario Andretti in a 5-liter factory Ferrari 512S was able to catch up, pass and win by only 23.8 seconds. It was the closest finish at Sebring up to that time. Note that Steve’s left foot is in a cast. He broke it in six places shortly before Sebring. As a result, Revson did the lion’s share of driving.

Mario Andretti and Arturo Merzario drove the #19 Ferrari 512S at Sebring in 1970. They led for almost ten hours until transmission issues caused them to retire. Andretti then was placed in another factory 512 for the win. Pedro Rodriguez, Leo Kinnunen and Jo Siffert drove the #15 Gulf Porsche 917K to 4th overall due mostly to faulty wheel hubs. Further back is the #16 Porsche Audi 917K of Vic Elford & Kurt Ahrens, Jr. that was a DNF. To the right of that car is the Chevron B8 of Carlos Fabre and Pepe Aguilar that was not classified at the end of the race. Many who were there believe this race was the best Sebring ever run. The Sebring Raceway plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this race next year. Photo enhanced by Photoshop.
