Fujibayashi Sakuya Samurai Love Ballad: Party

The moment she traps his wrist in a vice grip when all he wanted was to brush a stray leaf from her hair is when things start to crack.

Immediately she blanches, releasing his wrist. She can’t quite seem to meet his eyes when she whispers, I’m sorry.

It might be seconds or it might be minutes before he moves, hurt piercing through him so sharply it’s almost numbing. And even then, all he can do is shake his head. He doesn’t say it’s all right, because it’s not.

The truth is, they’ve been playing at this for too long, acting like nothing is wrong.

Writing off the visible tension in her shoulders when he gathers her in his arms as her lifelong self-preservation instincts.

Pretending that the way she laces her fingers through his when he tips her chin back for a kiss is just a way to bring him closer and not to keep his hand otherwise occupied when in such close proximity to her neck.

Ignoring the way her fingertips slip out from her sleeve, releasing her hold on the hari-gata shuriken he knows are concealed there when she sees that what he’s brought out from behind his back is only a small mitsuba bouquet.

I’m trying, she says, biting her lip and looking like the very picture of guilt. And Sakuya doesn’t wish for many things, but oh he wishes he could take that guilt away from her - why should her kind heart carry the burden of his mistakes?

Instead, he holds his hands out to her, palms up. Non-threatening. She takes them, tentatively stepping closer.

His eyes slide shut as he presses a kiss to her forehead. He is tired, so tired as he lets his lips linger over the furrow in her brow. He may not be able to fix things tonight, but he will at some point. He has to.

Because a life where the one you love most is afraid of you...

Well, that’s hardly a life at all.
