Ao3 version that lets you open the 'director's cut' where I, the author, explain every detail in excruciating detail to you and what it is in reference to.

Started out mostly on phone (wattpad days <3. Then later in a writing app), then switched to primarily laptop and now it's like a mix between phone and laptop and paper.

Specifically envisioning a "5+1" meeting at the bar (since this Kara is partying and I can see her also going to find other ladies to sleep with. She gives fuckgirl energy) and stumbling upon Lena and they have this back and forth and Kara leaves with other women 5 times before she actually leaves with Lena at the end.
Finished watching the Superman (2025) movie and came out with 2 thoughts:
1) good fucking movie.
2) how can I turn this into Supercorp?
#my writing talk#The banter would be very juicy#It'd also be a lot of fun to figure out who this Lena would be. Since they're technically all new characters now.#Supercorp

I have a specific file (or rather files for different types of ideas) on my laptop reserved for these.
I copy them over from my phone, where I collect them throughout the days and weeks and then I put them on my laptop.
And sometimes I play random number generator games where I roll for a number (I'm at 800 right now which doesn't include all the stuff currently on my phone) and add like 50 words to the idea that's there
Sometimes it's ideas I'll never work on. But I still get to think about them.
I looove the ideas files. It's where the joy lives
does anyone else have their notes full of random lines and ideas for writing that just pop into your head throughout the day?? suddenly i’m talking and then i’m like.. hold on really quick *pulls out phone and starts aggressively typing*

A few weeks ago I handed in my text in a feedback round and people kept talking about the parallels I added in and like 70% of them were not things I thought about. But omg. Omg they're so right!?!? So good? Damn brain we're really onto something here.
theres truly no better feeling on here than when someone leaves a long paragraph in the tags pointing out details you intentionally included in your art. YES !! PLEASE POINT IT OUT OTHERWISE I WONT KNOW IF PEOPLE NOTICED!! YOURE SO COOL!!!!!

I wouldn't say 1 comment = 1 motivation for chapter or any similar equation, because life's situational and things don't track like that.
But that said:
Comments help me know that someone cares. (cares right now, about my story)
If it's a multichapter fic a comment on the last chapter helps me know someone finished it (as you can leave kudos early, you may have read chapter 1 then decided you don't actually care and clicked off) (This also works with bookmarks that say up to where u read, but that's more me peering at your bookmark and less a direct conversation)
A comment can contain feedback on what the readers fixate on (character arcs, certain details, theories, etc etc). Doesn't have to. But if it does I can leave nods to it later on. If that's what vibes with me/the story.
The more detail in the comment the amount of the above that get ticked off increase, of course.
But genuinely. Someone left two emojis on one of my (unfinished) fics and I still think about them.
Did they help me write the next chapter? (technically kind of, since it is basically written it's just not like... Polished to the state I want it to be. Which is why it's in editing jail. But I digress)
Not really.
The chapter's not posted. But every comment on my fic means I get a little boost of energy towards that fic. Whether I can use them, how I can use it, if it's gonna be planning or writing inspiration, whether I use it for an entirely new idea or just treasure it in my heart, is an entirely different question that I have like 10% more control over than the readers do.
But... They do mean something.
So. Original question: do comments help me complete or continue my stories?
Not in the way you might think. But they definitely help.

I regularly go through my fics bookmarks just on the offchance someone wrote something in there (or recommended it! (I cherish those so much)). It's a nice little treat.
Comments allow for dialogue and are a direct way to tell the author how cool everything was.
Bookmarks are to remember your (favorite or just all your read) fanfics, a lot of people are using it to keep track of where they left off or their tbrs. Also for others who browse your profile to see what you read or enjoy.
Privating a bookmark makes all of it only for you (I do that sometimes for fics I don't want my friends to know I read them (they follow my ao3. It's got pros and cons)).
But yeah unprivated bookmarks are for all to see. That means if someone wants to see if they should read a fic a bookmark might give more insight, it might contain a personal anecdote or tags that help the bookmaker organise their bookmarks.
But most importantly they are also readable by the author. (so make sure you don't say anything bad in there that goes against fandom etiquette!)
:)
I have a question about a certain function of ao3 that I think is somewhat relevant.
When you bookmark a fic you have the ability to leave a note and choose whether that bookmark is public or private. Does the author get to see the note? I ask because if so that is essentially another way to comment on the entire fic published to that point and I will make a point to actually write something in the notes instead of just quickly making a bookmark as fast as possible.
Sorry if it's a super obvious, I've been using ao3 for years but never really considered it.
so. authors cannot see private bookmarks at all. they *can* see public ones, but only if they go looking for them. they don't get notification of bookmarks. they *do* get emails with comments in. its easier to reread comments.
if you want to write things in bookmarks as well as comment, that's great! an author might see it. but it shouldn't be a replacement for commenting, yknow?
#I'm gonna assume what nomorezerocomments wanted to drill home was that they don't count towards the comment score here#And also that comments are great for discussion and conversation.#Fandom's getting lonelier by the day. Comments make it less so.#Bookmarks kudos and comments all carry different meanings. All are great.#Anyways.#I hope I added insight and if not then uh... Eh.

Just realised that we tell each other I love you in so many different ways all the time forever and now I need to hug my friends until we become one
Little trinkets we keep, ways we talk that adapt towards the other's cadence and word choices, keeping a seat free at gatherings, bracelets on our wrists, tiny little speckles of each other shared always and forever reverberating until we forget who said what first and who introduced who to which show.
I love you I love you I love you.

Right now he's an old af vampire with no social knowledge. He wouldn't even be able to begin to fathom what a tiktok is. He's be spouting the stupidest takes about that word imaginable.
Dad guy would... Hm. Maybe?
And I rly hope Alex isn't on tiktok. He's five. I think that their dad is good about keeping them away from phones... Idk about their mom though.
She is 100% on tiktok btw

I'm sorry but what the fuck? This is so beautiful. I don't even have context and I feel tears in my eyes.
Ahajwjhshshs writing in 1st person is surprisingly difficult,
Like im trying to write a fluff scene and losing it.
The paragraph that I've rewritten 3 times ft. My obscene usage of commas(genuinely take them away from me)
