a lot of stories treat romance like it makes the relationship between two characters self explanatory and to be honest it doesn’t

So I finished Stargate Atlantis last night and umm. I am sad about John Sheppard?
He starts the show as a guy who doesn't really care for or about himself, disliked by his superiors because he wouldn't follow protocol and was too willing to sacrifice his own safety for the safety of others. And he ends the show as... Still most of those things.
He had the least personal growth, perhaps, of all the main characters. He is the unchanging and impenetrable monolith the other characters cling to.
In fact, he has the least personal revelation, too. There are a bare handful of episodes where we learn much of anything about his past or motivations, and every bit of that is heartbreaking. The father he ran away from, the brother who doesn't know him at all, the ex that didn't understand what he was, the comrades he couldn't save. He's left literally nothing behind that he cares to go back to.
We don't know why he joined the military, although "run away and spite his dad" seems likely. We don't see any evidence of friends from his youth, and it's not a long shot to say that he left them, too, when he left his family, his social class, and all the expectations and mores thereof.
They save the worst for last, with Vegas and the John that could have been, which is pure tragedy.
Ronon actually comes closest at one point, when John is about to take yet another giant risk on himself, and Ronon snatches the weapon out of his hand and says, "It doesn't always have to be you". But that's the only counterpoint we ever get to John's, "because I'm the guy".
His reason for getting up in the morning, for taking the risks he takes, is to be the myth for everyone else. To be their rock, to be the one that gives them hope when there's no reason to hope, because John will come for them. He thinks that his value to the world is to be That Guy--and nothing short of that is enough.
And no matter how many people he saves, there are always more he can't save, that he "fails" to save, so it's never enough.
No one ever meaningfully counters that. To the very end of the show, he's still the guy who is going to make it work for everyone else, no matter what, and is entirely happy to kill himself to do it. No one ever taught that boy that he could have value beyond what he did for others. So, in conclusion, I have a sad.

My little brother @river-dragons likes to talk about his trans boy Sokka headcanons and that got me thinking
Sokka, who was able to physically transition through spirit magic (there's at least one spirit with dominion over identity, and isn't gender a facet of identity?), just going about being his skeptical self, doubting everything. He and Katara have a little inside joke about it where she says "You're one to talk about spirirt magic not existing Mr. Hotshot Macho Man" and he deliberately misses the point, saying things like "You know how much effort I put into bulking up, I didn't just wish for it," or "I got Dad's forhead and jawline, it's not magic, just good genes."
And then he gets swept into the spirit world on the Winter Solstice and a bunch of spirits recognize him as "the kid what's-his-face helped out with his gender" and they wanna see him and reassure him that he's very much a young man but they don't quite understand human concepts of gender so they end up saying things like "You look so... square! And strong!"
But they also don't understand human needs or time so they keep complimenting him without realizing that the poor guy has to piss like a racehorse and hasn't eaten for almost a whole day.
And he's asked if he hates spirits one day and he says "Nah, they're cool, they just don't understand bathrooms or meal times. They really like to talk though."

oh ive never seen a trans boy sokka hc and i actually love it,,, i highkey hc suki as trans too so they can have Solidarity. also i thought there would be more trans zuko headcanons in the fandom where are they hiding
I love the concept of trans Suki!! In all honesty, I think all the Kyoshi Warriors have their own "gender stuff" for lack of a better term (be that being any particular kind of not cis, gender nonconforming, questioning, etc,) and seek membership with the group because they don't feel so alone. Avatar Kyoshi herself gives off very strong trans people will be protected vibes to me, though I can't quite tell if it's that I feel she herself is trans or she is a devoted ally and protector of trans people (in particular trans women). Maybe both.
In any case, Suki and Sokka have matching T-shirts that say "cisn't" and no one can convince me otherwise.
As for trans Zuko, I feel like I should put all my imagination into coming up with a very grounded scenario, but all that's coming to mind is Uncle Iroh, tearing off a piece of his own gender like it's bread or something, and giving that piece to Zuko like "here, nephew, you can have some of mine." Iroh is secure enough in his masculinity that he'd give a bit to all the young trans men and it would never run out, like that Jesus story with the bread and fish.

Consider: Zuko and Mai reconnecting when they meet again in college away from family expectations and they're both trans and about the same size so they trade old clothes.
Mai sees Zuko wearing her old button-up shirt, but it's untucked with the sleeves rolled up, over distressed jeans and sneakers rather than the slacks, dress shoes, and suit jacket picked out for her to wear with it. It's a good look on him.
Zuko sees Mai wearing one of his old dresses. He was told it would only be acceptable with nude stockings and sensible flats, but there she is matching it with fishnets, high-heeled boots and a nigh ridiculous amount of jewellery. His heart skips a beat. He's tempted to propose then and there

His name means "coal".
He was created with enormous pressure and heat.
He's so flammable.
He fights them and yet he's a fuel for their fire.
He's much closer to Fire Nation than he thinks.
Bless you @atlaculture, your posts about names are incredible and very inspiring! As well as your whole blog.

welcome to 12 months of daggers

what
This is a fest dedicated to the Dagger Squadron from the movie Top Gun Maverick. The focus is to highlight a single Dagger member each month and to create something with that Dagger in mind. It can be a fic, it can be art, meta, a playlist whatever you want. As long as the focus is that particular dagger.
when
This will start in May of 2025 since the movie originally came out in May 2022. We're going to start with Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw since he was a main character.
rules
Don't be a dick, seriously. If you don't like something, update your blacklist tags and keep quiet.
The character of the month must be the focus. If you're writing a fic, you can use whatever characters you like, whatever pairing you like, but the focus must be on that character. I.E: if you write a Hangman/Rooster story during the Rooster month the focus must be on him. We want to highlight each individual character to the best of our ability.
You can post wherever you want originally but there must be a Tumblr post so it can be reblogged to this blog. We do have an AO3 collection set up which can be found here
Please tag your posts with #daggerfest so we can find them.
schedule
may: bradley 'rooster' bradshaw june: natasha 'phoenix' trace july: neil 'omaha' vikander august: logan 'yale' lee september: reuben 'payback' fitch october: robert 'bob' floyd november: callie 'halo' bassett december: jake hangman seresin january: brigham harvard lennox february: javy coyote machado march: mickey fanboy garic april: billy fritz avalone
