I have some new life for you guys today. There's a pigeon nest on my balcony at work and there are two babies growing in there!

Yes, I do realise that the reason they are there is because it'd been cold for so long, I totally neglected it and by the time I was going to clean it up properly, the parents had already started to arrange the debris into a nest and I didn't want to scare them off. I also recognise that had it been literally any other spot, I would've complained about bird dirt in the future. But now, those are my balcony babies and I feel strangely proud. This photo is a few days old and they are even more fluffy now.

Happy Wednesday, gang!

That's so cool that you get a front row seat to watching those baby birds grow up, Karolina 🤩 i bet they are very happy you didn't tidy up your balcony in time.

Yesterday, I went to an ethnographical museum to check out two exhibitions that I've been very excited to explore. One was about demons, monsters, and ghosts in Japan, with lots of interesting stories to read about (but i didn't really get many photos taken, the one of the left was my friend's pic). The other was about Mexico, about life and death, one that I've wanted to check out for a long time but we didn't realise how near closing time it was so we had to rush through the whole exhibition unfortunately. Didn't really have time to read much, but at least I got some photos of some very cool masks!

The closest experience I've ever had to discovering "the vitamin" was buying a 100% wool outfit and wearing it in the winter.

Not only was I not freezing anymore, I was not sweating and overheating either. The horrible sensory nightmare of winter clothes disappeared.

In particular, I bought a pair of wool pants. They were a thrifted pair of fancy dress pants like you would wear at an important office job, and they were easily the most comfortable pair of winter-appropriate pants i'd ever worn. I wore them Every Single Day.

From that point on I realized a lot of my clothes were making me feel bad, and the common thread was polyester. Especially polyester blends.

It's a trap because the polyester clothes are the ones that always feel sooooo silky soft when they are in the store, whereas cotton, linen and wool can feel comparatively rough and scratchy. But when actually wearing them for hours throughout the day, it's the natural fibers that feel more comfortable.

Maybe the secret to sensory comfort is not about the presence of softness, but the absence of overloading sensations. Or maybe the sensory stress and agony is not triggered by texture of the fabric, but by how it breathes and regulates temperature.

Then there's the problem of clothing life span: polyester blends, no matter how soft they seem at first, become rough and scratchy and covered in hard, itchy pills after wearing them 10 or 20 times, whether or not they have been tumble-dried or even washed at all. (I tested it!) Linen and cotton become softer and more comfy the more you wear them, polyester but ESPECIALLY polyester blends become a constant stressor. Polyester blend t-shirts I used to love for their softness now feel bristly and irritating.

So now I'm trying to change my wardrobe to as many natural fibers as possible, and the more natural fiber clothes i have the more I realize that the plastic fibers stress me out. It's so easy to overheat or freeze in them and they're always degrading and becoming less comfortable and it sucks.

he takes a moment in which his face is not like a person's face. "there was a time," he says, "i'm not sure how long, years. when i went to a funeral every weekend." he tells you about two funerals in a day, and choosing between friends when you couldn't make it to both. he does not look at you, he looks at them. his wet grey gaze is so clear that you start to see ghosts. it will be years before you understand why it feels like your grief too. why the ghosts call you family.

I, too, had some bad news last week concerning the health of a friend of mine. I'm trying to banish the negative thoughts or fill my head with other things while I await updates on that front.

Summer feels like it should be filled with happier things, but it seems we all struggle a bit lately. If anyone needs it, don't hesitate to reach out!

Sorry to hear that news, Karolina :( i will never be able to understand that so many willingly choose to vote for parties that doesn't think everyone deserves equal rights and that are so utterly selfish in their goals. Of course Trump would be happy about such news 😒 he and people like him disgust me.

While i dont wish for worse times, i hope they do so poorly as a party that the people demand a new election.

I don't really have much to tell this week. Motivation to work is low now that I don't have set assignments and deadlines over the summer, but I really need to get some practice in...

This is--a Tuesday. Can't quite bring myself to say a happy one. We had the second tour of our presidential elections this past Sunday and the results are terrifying. One one hand, we've set a participation record, which is beautiful. But on another, the man who won, I have no words. It would be bad enough if he was just a member of the radical right wing but the things that surfaced during the campaign, holy shit. Suffice it to say, Donald Trump was very happy and congratulatory.

So yeah, not very happy over here. And I still haven't quite slept off the Sunday night I spent mostly refreshing the results-tracking page.
