Quick Update:

Hey y'all. I know the queue ran out a few days ago so I thought I would give some context. The long and short of it is that I've been at a work conference and then also dealing with traveling to family pretty much every weekend to help care for my grandma who's at the last stages of terminal cancer. Add in some minor health problems of my own and debating a job change and it has been a rough few weeks.

This isn't an official hiatus or anything, just a quick explanation and a request to bear with me. Updates are going to be sporadic for a while. I usually do a good chunk of my playing and prep on the weekends, so it's been hard to fit in any sims time (I think it's been almost two weeks since I had time to play). I'd love to sit and play all day but real life needs me currently.

And last but not least, I just want to say that the fact that people read my posts and enjoy the Westbrooks brings me such joy, so thank you! I love the UDC community and how much passion and research goes into everyone's games. It's been lovely getting to be part of such a friendly and supportive community.

1530 Update:

Cindy and Larsa are steadily growing, despite Leanna's concerns about Larsa's health. Perhaps keeping up with his lively and always on the move half-sister has something to do with his growing strength. As she is currently managing the lands for Zidane, Leanna cannot spend as much time with her younger son as she would like. Yet she is oddly comforted knowing that Abby is taking care of him. Even though she herself does not like the woman, Leanna recognizes that Abby is not the sort of person to harm a child for the sake of revenge. And she knows that Abby too had loved Hercules and loves his children because of that.

1530 Stats Time!

I know we just did this with the Sweating Sickness recap and not much has changed so this is going to be a fairly short recap. As you can see, we're still suffering from an incredibly low and aging population. Additionally, we've had no marriages in over ten years and no one has any baby rolls left.

Despite all of that, we have a couple good things coming our way. First, no more big epidemics for about 25 years. We definitely need this reprieve so our current children can age up and having babies of their own. Second, our two teens both rolled to marry young so we should have marriages happening very soon. And third: we have two male heirs. As long as our boys can hang on to adulthood, I feel secure in being able to make sure that we can get past this generation while keeping the Westbrook name intact. I'm honestly really sad that all of Abby's boys died because I was hoping to play as them and get away from a nobility storyline. Let me live my in-town ceramist dreams, dang it!

The Bell Family, January 1530.

Montblanc has recently gone through a growth spurt and Fama can hardly believe that this tall, strong young man is her little baby. Her husband has been gone for nearly 13 years but seeing Montblanc now brings back memories she had forgotten. While in looks her son takes after herself, his coloring, mannerisms, and strange habit of howling at the moon are all inherited from his father.

The Zest Family, January 1530.

After being rocked by half of their household dying from the Sweating Sickness, the Zests once again had to face death. This time it was their matriarch, Shiew, who slowly succumbed to an unknown illness over a period of time. It was hard for both Janus and his children, who had clung to Shiew in the wake of Breanne's death. And now Janus is left totally alone, doing his best to raise two motherless children.

Life at the convent has been unchanging and idyllic for several years. But nothing can remain the same forever. The sisters know that their beloved mother superior is climbing in age and the rumblings that have been occurring around theology cannot escape them forever.

The Oliva Family, January 1530.

Acca Larentia's last few years have been solitary but not lonely. The horses that Februus bought to breed have become dear family to her. She spends as much time as she can out riding. When she's moving, she can take peace in the current moment. It is only when she is alone in her house at night that the memories of those she's lost haunt her.

The Miyazakis, January 1530:

Business has been steady at the bar and Elwin has quickly learned the ropes thanks to his uncle. The two still aren't necessarily close to each, even though they're the only family each has left in the world.

1529 Update:

Having been toddling for an entire year, Zidane is quick to get into trouble. But is it trouble if the servants cannot, and his mother will not, correct the little Lord? Everything must go his way for he has already learned all it takes is a bit of a tantrum and he will receive whatever he wants. While upstairs is busy coddling the two little lordlings, tragedy strikes Abby's family. Early in the year her middle daughter Fran came down with a passing disease. Despite the care her mother gave her, Fran kept coughing and growing weaker and weaker, eventually refusing food altogether. Eventually, the little girl wasted away altogether.

1528 Update:

The family struggled with the loss of Hercules and so many children during the Sweating Sickness. Yet, life goes on. Abby delivered a healthy baby girl, Cindy, while Leanna gave birth to another son she named Larsa a few months later. While Larsa seemed healthy at first he struggled with health during his first few months. Leanna's prayers were answered as he grew stronger the older he got, though his early difficulties will likely make him more prone to sickness throughout his life.

Stats Time!

If you could guess from the mass casualties we had, the sweating sickness was not kind to us this go around. We started off with 30 sims, none of them being Young Adults (20-29). If we want to get even more specific, we did not have a single sim between 15-30 years of age and none of our current Adult sims have any baby tries left. So our population is about to reach a stark plateau until these kids can age up and get married.

From our 30 sims, only 18 survived and one household was totally wiped out (not hard when there was only one sim in it). Chances of dying from the disease was 33.33% but our actual rate was 40%, so it was actually higher than it should have been! And somehow it decided to take a lot of my babies instead of the nuns and elders. (I'm not bitter at all). The ages with the highest losses were our infants, children, and teens who all lost 50% of their population. Our least affected age group were the elders, who lost 33.33% (or one third), the exact number that should have been lost.

One positive is that this is our last major event until the 1550s, so we're praying that our population can actually recover and the few children we have left will be able to grow up in peace and have large families of their own.

Raising a son as a single mother isolated from the village community isn't easy, but Fama and Montblanc wouldn't have it any other way. The two adore each other and Montblanc has learned not to question the strange ingredients and cauldrons that Fama sometimes brings home. Their isolation is most likely why the Sweating Sickness does not affect them, though it hits the surrounding community hard.

Athelridge has spent the years without his wife traveling as a guard for various caravans in addition to being a city guard. Being out and about in the community so much is likely why he is one of the first to catch and die from the disease as the new pandemic begins.

The Zest Family, 1528, Post-Sweating Sickness.

The disease swept in and took unrelentingly from this household. Wyatt's old and battle-worn body could not fight the disease, but the real shock was that Breanne, Serah, and Sazh all succumbed as well. This leaves Janus to raise their two youngest alone with the help of his mother.
