Neurosurgery in the Philippines: Is it really worth it?
Choosing an area of specialization for medical students is probably one of the hardest decisions they have to make in their entire medical careers. Some students know what they want to specialize in even before they enter medical school while for others, the decision becomes clearer after years of studying.

There is a lack of Filipino specialists in neurosurgery and because of this gap, a lot of Filipinos still suffer from surgically treatable neurological diseases. In fact, based on the data released by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, cerebrovascular diseases remain to have high mortality and disability rate (15%) among Filipinos, especially the children. One of the factors that create such shortage in the neurological field is the limited opportunities for training. The application for training is very competitive. There are limited slots in neurosurgery for residents; usually in most training institutions, there is just one. These institutions only accept a neurosurgery trainee every two to three years.

In spite the hindrances in specializing in neurosurgery and neurology in the Philippines, this area of medicine remains one of the most sought-after specialties in the country. In an article by Insider Monkey author, Bojana Petković, neurology ranked fifth among the most in demand doctor specialties, only trailing behind cardiology, pulmonology, oncology, and nephrology. “Stroke is the second deadliest disease in the Philippines causing 12.14% of deaths every year,” wrote Petković.

The first step in the path to becoming a neurosurgeon involves a pre-medical undergraduate education. This usually includes a core curriculum consisting of:
A year of chemistry with the appropriate laboratory courses
A year of organic chemistry with laboratory courses
A year of biology with laboratory courses
A year of physics with laboratory courses
A year of English
A year of calculus or other advanced math classes, including statistics
The next step is to take around four to six of medical school. The best medical schools in the Philippines are University of the Philippines, Ateneo De Manila, De La Salle University, and the University of Santo Tomas.
After completing medical school it is time to apply for a residency training program at a hospital or an academic medical center.
Note: If you want to become a neurosurgeon abroad, it’ll take longer to complete your education.

Despite all the hard work and effort it takes to become a neurosurgeon, many people still consider it as an option because of the prestige, respect and satisfaction you’ll get from it.
Helping other people who are in need of a complex operation to save their lives while earning about ₱2,855,875 a year doesn’t sound too bad when you realize you’ll have to spend around fifteen to eighteen years in training :))
