Weird opinion, but…
I like that in the game, they never make a huge deal about the fact that Sadie is female.
The whole point of her character is that she turns into this badass gunslinger due to her past, and she just happens to be female.
In a lot of forms of media, they try to deliver a “girl power” message, but the message always comes out as forced and cheesy, with classic lines like “You can’t do that, you’re a girl!” Or “just because I’m a girl you think I can’t do this?” There were NO direct lines like that in the game.
Sadie goes to town to buy her own clothes, and she makes it clear she is capable of helping herself. Sadie is trigger happy against the men who killed her husband. Sadie begins to defend herself and the ones she cares about. Throughout it all, we don’t get any forced messages of “you can’t do that, you’re a girl!”
Sadie goes through the character development a lot of males go through: a tragic thing such as the death of a loved one turns them into badasses (John Wick, Bruce Wayne, Max Payne, etc). She just happens to be female through this character development. Her character arc is very similar to that of The Bride from “Kill Bill”, where her husband died and she seeks revenge. Ironically enough, that movie doesn’t make a huge deal about the fact that she’s female either.
So honestly, even though the efforts have good intentions, when you make it obvious that your message is “girls can do anything boys can!” it becomes unnecessarily forced and often leads to one dimensional characters.
Focus on character development.
Sadie isn’t just some female badass, she’s a badass in her own right that just happens to be female.
