Ways Flowers Can Make the Perfect Gift
People give flowers all the time for a variety of reasons – to celebrate an anniversary or birthday, to commemorate Mother’s Day, or to convey condolences when someone dies.
But there are many other reasons beyond the traditional flower days.
Tumblr media
Flowers are always a good idea to take to the hostess of a dinner party, and bouquets to celebrate births, new homes, or job promotions are becoming more popular. Ask most people which flowers were their favorite to receive and the answer will probably be the unexpected ones, such as the bunches that were sent to say "I love you" or "I am thinking of you" or simply "I thought it would brighten your day."
Did you know that every bloom has a specific meaning? From the yellow pansy that says I am thinking of you to the white lily’s promise of eternal, true love, each makes a unique statement. Consider amaryllis next time you want to tell your love how beautiful you think she is or choose lilac’s youthful innocence to mark a sweet sixteen birthday.
Of course, occasions to send blooms are as diverse as the variety of flowers available. Click here to see what our designers have up their sleeves.

5 Tips for Mother’s Day Flowers
It is time to spoil the mothers of the world again! Yes, we should show our darling mothers every day how much we love and appreciate everything they do for us, but who doesn’t love surprising their mom on Mother’s Day?
Tumblr media
#1 - As you no doubt know, all flowers were not created equal, and no two ladies have the same taste in blooms. This year, take the time to consider which flowers suit your mom's personality. Is she the formal lily or orchid type? Would she prefer a flowering plant that she can put in her garden? Perhaps she is a little bit wild – and a posy of wildflowers will make her day.
#2 - Next, consider which flora she proclaims as her favorite. Perhaps there is a distinct hue of rose that makes her feel appreciated, or she loves daffodils to confirm that spring is finally here!
#3 - Whatever you decide, there is no time to waste to secure the perfect bouquet. To make it easier for you (we understand how busy modern life is) you can order ahead online. This way your mother’s flowers will be delivered bright and early on her special day.
#4 - If you are still not sure what she would like or to select the blooms yourself, feel free to pop into the store, at 700 Ninth Street in Durham where we will gladly assist you.
#5 - Phone orders are being accepted at Ninth Street Flowers until Saturday morning, May 7.  Our number is 919-286-5640.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!

Flowers Make the Perfect Gift ... For You
Tumblr media
The old saying of “it’s always better to give than to receive” is definitely true.  But sometimes it’s nice to give yourself a little gift.  Whether it’s for a new promotion at work reaching a goal you set.  Even “just because.”
And what better way to treat yourself than a beautiful arrangement of flowers?
A stunning European arrangement of pastel blooms and unique foliage will look great on your entry table, in your living room or even at your office.
No matter where you place your arrangement, it is sure to bring you joy every time you look at them.  The beautiful scent and eye-popping colors will delight you for days!
PS - Don't forget to change the water every 2-3 days to replenish your thirsty flowers and ensure they don’t dry out.

3 Ways to Use Flowers to Add Wow to Your Wedding
Spring is almost here which means wedding season is fast approaching.  Are you finalizing plans for your upcoming spring or summer wedding? We have a few ways you can use flowers to add some WOW to your special day.
#1 - Decorate the Cake
Want to give your cake some extra pizzazz?  Put actual flowers on the cake!  You can have a beautiful cascade of flowers that match your bouquet and beautifully accentuate your colors!  Just be sure to remove them before cutting that first slice.  :)
Tumblr media
#2 - Flower Crowns
At Ninth Street Flowers we absolutely adore flower crowns.  What a unique and colorful way to dress up your bridal party.  Not only will they look amazing on your special day - but they’ll look incredible in your wedding photos.
Tumblr media
#3 - Put Out the Arrangements & Then Give Them Away
It’s pretty common to see floral arrangements on tables, particularly those featuring the bridal party.  But consider adding arrangements at other highly visited locations like the guestbook or a photo booth.  Your guests will love seeing the beautiful flowers and taking in their wonderful scent as they leave best wishes.
One thing that often perplexes brides is what to do with all the flowers after their big day.  Consider donating them to a local nursing home or hospital.  Flowers can provide a great lift in spirit.  You can also give them away as gifts to your guests.

Five Ways to Surprise Someone Special with Flowers this Valentine’s Day
Tumblr media
Surprising a special person in your life with flowers is an easy and fun way to give them a memorable Valentine’s Day. Here are a few ways to do it, guaranteed to make them smile!
1. Have an arrangement delivered to their office. Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year, so surprise them with flowers at work the Friday before – a great way to add a little joy to the end of the workweek (and a great teaser when you’ve got other Valentine’s Day plans in the works).
2. Fill your home with flowers. Surprise your partner with a home full of their favorite flowers. Or focus on one room – maybe fill the bedroom with flowers and candles (don’t forget the rose petals on the bed). Just don’t get caught – you want to see the look of surprise on your loved one’s face when they get home!
3. Give the gift that keeps on giving. Flowers on Valentine’s Day are great, but for a real surprise, what about arranging a monthly flower delivery to show them how much they mean to you all year long?
4. Go old school. Picking your date up? Show up with flowers in your hand – trust us, this retro sentiment is totally adorable and romantic.
5. Checking into a hotel and arriving at different times? Give the flowers to the front desk attendant to surprise your special someone with when they check in.
Flowers on Valentine’s Day are traditional, romantic, and fun – and anything but boring. Let your partner know how much they mean to you this year with Ninth Street Flowers, whether it’s your first date or your thousandth!

Yes, Flowers Have Personalities!
Tumblr media
Have you ever noticed that daisies make you feel happy? And gardenias or calla lilies make you feel, oh, maybe a little more glamorous or sophisticated than before you received them? Or have you sensed an urge to carve a pumpkin after placing mums on your front porch? It’s not just you. It’s the flowers; they have personalities, and as such, they influence you in a variety of ways.
So, next time you are sending flowers to a special someone in your life, think about the person, and look for a flower fitting their personality. Or, choose a flower fitting for the occasion you are celebrating. For example, daisies are great for a birthday or to celebrate the birth of a baby – daisies just radiate happiness! Lilies are sometimes popular at religious events – they have a delicate elegance about them that is fitting for a more serious occasion.
Here is our take on some of the “personalities” of a few types of flowers:
Happy/sunny: Daisies, daffodils and tulips would fall into this category. These are great for birthdays, or for any occasion for the person who has a “sunny” personality. They are usually popular with people who like color, creativity, but not too much fluff. In other words, they are not a “fancy” flower, and, as a result, also not as expensive as some more exotic flowers.
Natural/Earthy: This includes live plants, wildflowers and meadow flowers with accents from the woods.  These arrangements are popular with those who love getting back to nature, have a generally casual approach to life and love the outdoors. These flowers just make you feel comfortable and a bit like some of the outdoors has been brought inside.
Glamorous/Sophisticated: Asian, exotic and rare flowers are generally popular with those who want to give something more sophisticated, or consider themselves trendsetters who also enjoy living in the moment. Unique arrangements with a few rare, vibrant blooms are favorites.
Romantic: Of course, traditionally, this includes roses, but also anything in a pastel color, with a light fragrance, delicate accents like baby’s breath, and/or lace or ribbon as part of the arrangement. A beautiful vase can also add a romantic element to an arrangement, whether in its coloring, unique type of cut glass, detailing or shape.
Of course, this is merely a sampling of some flower “personalities”, but you get the idea. When choosing flowers for someone special, consider their personality and the personality of the flowers, along with the type of occasion. If you’re not sure, feel free to talk to one of our experts at Ninth Street Flowers – our experienced designers can make some excellent suggestions.

5 Helpful Flower Tips
Tumblr media
Depending on the care you give your flowers, most arrangements can last between 4 - 7 days.
If you receive a bouquet, be sure to put your flowers in water as soon as you get them home. Use luke-warm water, add plant food and place the flowers.
To help your arrangement last longer, cut stems every few days.
Keep your arrangements away from heat vents & windows. Keep them in a cool, dark location so your flowers won’t wilt early.
Keep the water fresh. Change the water every 2-3 days to replenish your thirsty flowers and ensure they don’t dry out.

We love creating exceptional flower arrangements for our clients. And we really appreciate it when they tell us that we made a difference for their special event. Here is a note we received from Rachel.
The flowers for our wedding were beautiful! Our photographer just sent us a link to some photos from the wedding and I loved seeing them again - they are the prettiest part of some of these photos. We did end up using them on Sunday for the brunch and again everyone commented on how beautiful they were. Here is a link that our photographer sent and thought you might be able to use a photo for your portfolio: http://annakirbyphoto.com/weddings/duke-gardens-wedding/ Best, Rachel
