Hi! I wanted to ask for a book recommendation! I'm doing a "get out of your comfort zone" kind of reading challenge and one of the prompts is a book recommended by a librarian, and you're a librarian, so. I'm generally pretty omnivorous, though I lean toward fantasy and I don't particularly enjoy modern literary fiction or things with sad endings. I read a lot, so maybe something more obscure?
You're a treat to follow on Tumblr, so I feel like you'd give good recommendations. Thanks in advance!
Hmm, well it's probably within your comfort zone, and I don't think it's that obscure because it got some buzz on here a while back, but for fantasy one fantasy read that I enjoyed recently was Legends and Lattes, which is like... THEE coffee shop AU to end all coffee shop AU's. It's about an orc mercenary lady who retires and starts a coffee shop and strikes up this very soft slow-burn romance with a tiefling-looking succubus. And there's THE WORLD'S CUTEST RATKIN BAKER. But I'd categorize that more under 'cozy autumnal read.' I feel like T. Kingfisher is also a pretty popular author on here, but I really loved "Nettle and Bone"---good blend between Fairy Tale Tropes and solid worldbuilding there. If you're in the mood for a more ~gothic~ read I've also enjoyed both "What Moves the Dead" and "A House with Good Bones" by her, as well.
For something kind of obscure--I mean I wouldn't say it has a ~happy~ ending but it's a very short read and a fun ride--"Your Favorite Band Cannot Save You" by Scotto Moore was really fun. It's cosmic horror meets kind of dotcom era music journalism. Oh! Another über-short cosmic horror read that kind of defangs itself by being fun! and cheeky! is "Walking to Aldebaran" by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
Another short read, and also part post-apocalyptic part western featuring lesbians: "Upright Women Wanted" manages to hit all my Louis L'Amour plot point bells while also being kind of... intensely introspective about like, masking and closeting and it manages to up its own western tension vibes because of it. Though honestly if you're looking for sci-fi lesbians *specifically* I'd recommend "This is How You Lose the Time War"--not that obscure because it won the Hugo award, but it's also like "If you haven't read it yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING."
Gosh let me know if you've already read a bunch of these, and I'll see if I don't have other recommendations. I love recommending stuff SO MUCH.

One of the things I've learned since starting to do storytimes at my library is that if you have a puppet, little kids will come up to you and like... just stare because they wanted to engage with the puppet, but also didn't really think through their half of the interaction. And then when you start talking to them through the puppet they're like, "Oh double shit, what am I supposed to say here." And then me as the puppeteer is stuck in this weird limbo position because I don't know if they're more intimidated by the aspect of interacting with me or the puppet.
...I think I have to work more on little routines between myself and the puppet so that I can kind of toss the conversational ball between myself and the puppet before tossing it to the kid.

Okay but why did Morph have to do Gambit dirty like that? And what was he going to do with Wolverine's claws in the shower?
I'm SO GLAD they've kept Morph around along with all his Mister Sinister PTSD. It's like they've gone "oh hey he's gone from wisecracking cannon fodder and source of angst for other characters to actually his own fully dimensional character *and* he can still be a little shit."
He had to do Gambit like that because Gambit's an easy target, honestly.
I'm not usually one for love triangles, but I am interested in seeing how the Rogue/Gambit/Magneto dynamic plays out. I feel like Rogue has more romantic feelings towards her relationship with Magneto than Magneto does, but I think a lot of that just has to do with how touch starved she is in general and her own guilt and sense of kindredness towards Magneto because she's a former villain herself. Magneto I think is largely grieving Charles and sees a strong rapport with Rogue both because of the former villain thing and because Rogue's powers and their drawbacks kind of made her a unique project for Charles. She's kind of the embodiment of how much work Charles has left unfinished, and this lingering question of "okay how DO we help the mutants who are being screwed over by their powers 50-100% of the time?"

X-Men '97 with the magical girl transformation. They really are pulling this stuff from your mind.
I'm just really impressed that it's episode 3 and they've already gone beyond the comic book soap opera event horizon by bringing in Goblin Queen and playing her jury-rigged gone-through-several-retcons origin story completely straight.
Also the fucking overtly on-the-nose "these are my characters' interior conflicts" nightmare sequences. Haha I do that.
