Join me on a stroll through a nearly forgotten hillside onsen hamlet in Sekikawa Village. Yusawa Onsen (not to be confused with Yuzawa Onsen which is a famous hot spring area in a different part of Niigata) is nestled in a mountainous and depopulated corner of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for an early February day! During my walk, I pass by an old abandoned riverside onsen hotel before wandering around the narrow streets. Then I climb some hillside stairs behind a temple to a hilltop park littered with stone statues. I finish my walk by exploring a small graveyard beside the temple.

Buckle up and join me on an exhilarating road trip through the picturesque Japanese mountains, from the charming town of Sekikawa, Niigata, to the serene Iide, Yamagata. It's early spring and lots of mountains are still covered in snow. The leaves haven't started to pop yet, so everything is pretty grey. There are lots of tunnels cutting through the mountains plus winding roads as we follow rivers through the valleys. I hope you enjoy it!
