Hannibal Lecter is not INTJ

It’s pretty much been accepted for the past 20-25 years that Hannibal is an INTJ (from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI). I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone question this assertion, in spite of the fact that we have a completely new take on the character now, reconceived as a fallen angel in love with humanity (x). People seem to accept it for a few reasons: first, because they don’t know that much about the MBTI themselves, so they’re relying on others to tell them; second, because some people who think they understand the MBTI don’t really understand it; third, some people have a shallow understanding of Hannibal’s character; and finally, people often accept the status quo. (I don’t mean to imply that these apply to everyone who subscribes to the theory of Hannibal being an INTJ. I’m sure some have expertise and have put some time into considering it: these are simply my observations of most of the fan population.)

I recently expressed the opinion that Hannibal is not INTJ, and have received at least five requests to explain why I don’t think so and what type he does fit in, so in this post I will attempt to do that. If you are interested in this topic, buckle in and get comfortable, because that’s a lot of material to cover.
