Did you hear that Nokemon is making people pay for points for Fakemon that you can control the typing and status [legendary or non-legendary] of? Awfully similar to NFTS if you ask me.

Okay, so I looked into it and right off the bat: this isn't an NFT thing. I know a lot of AI programmers have been sucked into the whole NFT business (looking DIRECTLY at you, Wombo), but that's not what this is.

So, to explain what's happening here, I first have to explain how the Nokemon website is run. For starters, there is no "Nokemon Company" behind the site, it's just one guy who made it as a passion project: Liam Eloie. You can see his name at the bottom of the webpage. He has stated on his Twitter multiple times in the past that he doesn't have the resources to run a live generation service, so how the website normally works is he will generate a bunch of mons on his end (tens of thousands, really), then upload them to the site. This is why you sometimes get duplicates. He's expressed a desire to run it as a live service, so users can interact with the AI and make truly unique mons, but he just didn't have the resources to make it happen.

This is his way of getting live generation off the ground. It's locked behind a paywall, so the chances of the servers being overwhelmed is lower, and he can work out the bugs in a lower-stress environment.

As for the Nokepoints themselves: they're best equated to arcade tokens. You exchange your actual money for them so you can put one in the machine and see what it spits out under more specific parameters. The difference between the normal generation and the paid generation is the difference between watching someone play a claw machine and popping a quarter or two in to play it yourself. It's got nothing to do with cryptocurrency, NFTs, or anything to that effect.

As a final note: all of the proceeds he makes from paid features go straight back into the website. The fact that he's even able to do live gens at all now is a testament to this. So, consider pitching in if you want to see it grow.
