Montana Sky - Chapter Nine
Tumblr media
When Steve left Montana he promised himself he wouldn't return unless someone died-- happy to leave that world behind him. He thought he'd have several decades before he was dragged back to the ranch he used to call home. But Sara died. His big sister-- bringing him back to the family.
His family was far from traditional. It wasn't any wonder that it took one of them dying in a freak accident to get them all in the same place again. If that wasn't distressing enough, it became clear Steve's father would need more help with Sara being gone, forcing him to stick around longer.
On top of it all, his childhood sweetheart's presence on the ranch was impossible to ignore. Steve knew if he wasn't careful, it'd be all too easy to fall into his arms and never leave. The only issue was, if Jonathan learned his secret, there was no way he'd want a thing to do with Steve.
HUGE thanks to @melsmalone and @lady-lostmind! *This fic is going on a brief hiatus until August as I finish up my SHBB fic!*

Steve was fourteen years old when his first heat hit.
He didn’t even know it was happening.  Everyone assumed he’d be an alpha or a beta.  He was athletic, masculine, and a Hopper.  The chances of him being omega felt impossible.  But he had a fever that wouldn’t break, and discomfort in his abdomen that he couldn’t place.  Worse than all of that was the unrelenting desire.
Then he noticed it.

Finding His Lens - Chapter Eleven
Tumblr media
After breaking up with his long-time partner, Steve Harrington moves in with his best friend, Robin. While he's thrilled to be there, he needs to get back on his feet. Robin has been working at a catalog-- modeling to put herself through college. She gets him a job, hoping he can do this until he gets his ducks in a row. While initially hesitant, Steve is surprised to find that he's good at this-- like really good at it. There's just one catch... he can't fucking stand the photographer. The guy is a total asshole. He's standoffish and rude, and definitely doesn't like Steve much either. Too bad Robin seems to like him and keeps inviting him out with them.
Last update until August as I finish up my @steveharringtonbigbang fic!

Tommy dropped the Jonathan thing. Or at least he stopped talking about it to Steve. For his part, Steve just didn’t bring Jonathan up. It wasn’t hard. He and Jonathan weren’t exactly thick as thieves. They worked together. That said, he didn’t exactly know Jonathan well enough to defend him either. All he really knew was that he was a good photographer, that he was a bit antisocial, kind of snobbish, with a kid brother. It wasn’t exactly evidence that he wasn’t interested in Steve.
If Jonathan was interested, then he had a funny way of showing it… by not showing it at all. He didn’t seek Steve out, but he didn’t avoid him either. At best he was indifferent towards him. Steve didn’t mind that. He wasn’t looking to be best friends either. Tommy wasn’t convinced.
It was strange. Tommy didn’t seem this concerned about anyone else he worked with. Steve thought for sure he’d be more threatened by some of the actual models he worked with. That would at least make sense to Steve. He wouldn’t be thrilled about Tommy working with a bunch of gorgeous models either. But no. The issue was weird little Jonathan Byers.

“You’re not leaving yet,” Steve whined through gritted teeth.   They were in their nest, hidden up in Jonathan’s den.  It was barely 4 AM and Jonathan was getting ready to head out and move the cattle to another pasture.
Jonathan gave an amused chuckle.  “Go back to sleep.  I’ll be back before you know it.”
“It’s not fair!”  He tossed an arm over his face.  “We never get to have wakeup sex.”
He snorted, shaking his head at him in disbelief.  “I had no idea you were being deprived.”
Steve nodded, a playful pout on his lips as he brought his arm down.  “Are you gonna do something to fix that?”

Things were different after karaoke. While Steve and Jonathan were still far from friends, the animosity between them was gone. The most shocking piece of that was how well they worked together when they weren’t trying to fight one another. It took about a week for them to establish a shorthand. Long gone were the days of Steve not knowing what to do, and needing to be corrected over most poses.
Jonathan was right. As time went on, more garment bags came, and his cheeks subsequently grew. He wasn’t on the cover again after that first time, but he wasn’t worried about it. It would come again with time.
The best days were when he got to shoot with Robin. They’d been paired together a few times, and it was almost like Christmas. They were comfortable with each other and had their own way of knowing what the other needed without anything needing to be said. The work was easier and far more enjoyable when he got to work alongside her.
“I feel like I hardly get to see you,” Tommy said with a pout. They were at Steve and Robin’s place intertwined on the couch.
“It’s just until we’re done with this issue. They’re giving me more to do now. It’s a good thing, but I miss you too,” he said honestly. Well, it was mostly true. He did miss Tommy, but it was hard to deny that he was enjoying himself with the modeling. It wasn’t as though he thought he could make a career out of it, but he liked it. He was good at it. He was feeling the most independent since… well, ever.
Tommy tossed his head back with a groan. “I’m glad they finally got their heads out of their ass long enough to realize that they should be using you more, but I’m selfish. I hate sharing you.”
Steve snorted. “You’re so dramatic.”
Tommy gave him a playful pout before capturing his lips sweetly. “It’s your fault. I was never this needy before you.”
He rolled his eyes lightly. It was sweet, really, but if Tommy had it his way, Steve would be living in his apartment attached to Tommy at the hip. Steve wasn’t ready for that.
“Why don’t you come visit,” he suggested.

When It's Cold
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
“I can be your blanket if you get cold,” Jonathan offers. “Hm.” Steve’s tongue wets his lips. Jonathan is momentarily transfixed by the movement over the bow of their shape and the texture created by the delicate crinkles of chapped skin. “We can share body heat,” Jonathan continues when he gets no further response. “We’ll open our jackets and I’ll sit in your lap so we can snuggle.” An eye cracks open to peer at Jonathan. “Snuggle?” or On the way back to college, Steve and Jonathan get stuck in a snow bank.
The scraps grew into a one-shot.
Shout out to @aibhlynn @faithfulcat111 @deviantnation and @nomadic-wolf for their encouragement.

Steve woke to the feeling of Jonathan stirring beneath him.  He groaned as he blinked his eyes open.  It was still dark out, the sun not even starting to peek over the horizon.  The digital clock was bright.  3 AM. Ugh.  This was the worst part of fucking a rancher.  The hours were brutal.
“Go back to sleep,” Jonathan said as he sat up.  “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
If Steve was a little less exhausted, he’d argue.  He’d demand Jonathan not leave until he gave Steve another knot for the road.  He was way too fucking tired to have that fight.  “What time will you be done?”
Jonathan let out an amused chuckle.  He gently brushed Steve’s hair back from his face.  “When the work’s done, baby.”

PROMPTS STONATHAN WEEK 2025
Tumblr media
Please click the read more to see more detailed explanations about the prompts!
Day 1 (Saturday, Augsut 16th)
Only One Bed: Forced proximity taken to the next level. We all know and love this trope, and Stonathan deserves to be put through the awkwardness that is sharing a bed with each other. Whether you place it in canon, where Jonathan has to share a bed with the ex of his girlfriend, or whether you place it in a universe where these two have history between them in a different sense, we can all agree it will be accidentally intimate, extra awkward, and the perfect set up for something to happen.
Day 2 (Sunday, August 17th)
Friends with Benefits: Sometimes hooking up with a friend is simpler than to complicate life with romantic feelings that can only come to ruin your day. However, what happens when that friend that was supposed to be your safe escape becomes something more? Is it really worth it to risk the friendship, betting on something bigger that has every single probability of not working out? What a mess!
Day 3 (Monday, August 18th)
Stolen Kisses/Moments: Sometimes life gets in the way, whether that's because the supernatural end of the world won't quit chasing you or because life simply won't give you a break. This prompt is for those little pockets of time in which life comes to a stop. They can be quiet and tender or explosive and desperate. No matter which one, somehow the world stops spinning for a moment and there's only the two of you.
Day 4 (Tuesday, August 19th)
Second Chance/Exes to Lovers: When the ambers waken and build to a fire that threatens to burn everything down! Where does all the history between two people go once things are over? What happens if some of those feelings never died like one of them thought they would? This day, you can explore all the messiness that comes with welcoming someone from your past back into your life. Will history rewrite itself, or will a new history take shape?
Day 5 (Wednesday, August 20th)
Stuck Together/Forced Proximity:  Isn’t it just inconvenient when for reasons out of your control you have to share a same space with someone you might not like so much, or someone who might not like you so much, or someone you might like too much, or just someone you haven’t talked to in a long time, and it’s just Awkward? Yup, it’s the worst. But it’s so much fun when it happens to the characters we love! Go wild with this one!
Day 6 (Thursday, August 21st)
Secret Relationship: Holding hands underneath tables, where no one can see. Sharing glances with each other from across the room. Waiting for the door to close so you can steal a kiss. The burden of a secret sometimes might be worth it. It might make things even more exciting. It might just crush the relationship under its weight. There's so much to explore with this prompt!
Day 7 (Friday, August 22nd)
5+1: This one doesn't need more explanation, does it? Sometimes we need a second chance for things to go right. Or a third. Or a fourth. Maybe 5 tries? Okay, fine, let's give it a one more. The five times things didn't work out and the one time they finally did. A perfect scenario to run into awkward situations, for the yearning to build and for an explosive getting together!

Steve gaped at him. What was he looking at? It couldn’t possibly be a real issue of the catalog. There was no way. It was his first shoot— well, technically second, but why the fuck would they put him on the cover? It didn’t make any sense. Steve wasn’t naive enough to think he was such a modeling prodigy that he’d be on the cover right away. And yet….
“What am I looking at?” He asked dumbly.
Jonathan blinked at him. “You’re on the cover this issue, asshole. No one is out to get you. For whatever reason, Nancy likes you. She gave you a high budget outfit and you did so well, she picked you for the front cover.  Believe it or not, fucking with your life isn’t exactly high on my list of priorities.”
Oh.

When It's Cold
The scraps continue to form something thanks to all the encouragement I've gotten. Previous parts have also been rewritten, so keep an eye out for whenever this makes it to AO3.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
“Jonathan,” Steve groans, the hint of a plea in his voice, “don’t bullshit me.”
“I’m not.” Jonathan makes a decision and leans in, fitting his lips against Steve’s in a kiss that lingers through the bridge between verse and chorus. He sits back and the double stroke of the drum matches the pounding of his heart.
What-ifs now dingy with regret fall over Jonathan’s trust issues with each its own unique form of rejection as he waits for Steve’s response. He stays still, once again a rabbit frozen at the threat of detection. His inner dialogue becomes loud enough to reprimand him for being so bold. Being attracted to men doesn’t mean Steve is attracted to Jonathan. Even if he is, he wants to get married and have kids and donate blood. Jonathan can’t expect him to give that up anymore than he could expect Nancy to give up her big plans.
Steve offers a wordless counter to Jonathan’s doubts by pulling him back in with a hand on the nape of his neck. He takes Jonathan’s upper lip, eagerly learning the contours of its shape with a press and part that melts away any remaining insecurity. Jonathan kisses back as the song changes to ‘The Promise’ by When in Rome. It is too basic for Jonathan’s tastes, the typical moody yet danceable attempt at making new wave more radio-friendly by stripping away its punk origins, but Steve likes it, so Jonathan put it on the mixtape anyway. He parts his lips at the gentle touch of Steve’s tongue and meets it with his own.
The sound of a soft moan resonating from the back of Steve’s throat ignites the tinder of sensitive nerves. Jonathan presses closer, burrowing into the warmth radiating from Steve. His lips leave Steve’s to kiss along the constellation of moles he had mapped earlier.
A honk from outside causes Jonathan to launch himself into the passenger seat. He looks at Steve, seeing the same fight or flight staring back at him. His panic quickly shifts to relief when he realizes someone has found them. Soft laughter breaks the tension. Freezing to death might be better than being torn apart by monsters or shot up by the military, but Jonathan would appreciate the opportunity to see where things went with Steve before he died. He takes his camera off the dashboard and takes a picture. It earns him a good-natured eye roll before Steve starts to get out of the car to talk with the driver who found them.
“Hold on,” Jonathan calls. He opens the glove box where he knows Steve keeps his gloves among the napkins and a surprising amount of lighters for someone who no longer smokes. Steve accepts them with an achingly fond smile. Jonathan takes another picture.
With the extra help, they are able to push the car back onto the road. The Stone Roses play ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ on the mixtape as Jonathan waits for Steve to say something. He wonders if Steve is similarly waiting for him. Maybe nothing needs to be said and they are just together now. Or maybe Steve is rethinking everything now that death is less imminent. The possibility keeps Jonathan waiting as ‘The Killing Moon’ by Echo & the Bunnymoon is followed by ‘Rock the Casbah’ by The Clash. The tape ends.

Being at Jonathan’s house sober was a completely different experience to when he was last there.  Technically it wasn’t Jonathan’s house.  It was the ‘Foreman’ residence.  Sara probably should have lived there instead of the main house, but he got the feeling she let Jonathan oversee most of the rancher operations and she was working from more of a business management standpoint.  She’d make the plans, and Jonathan would execute them while she focused on the business side of things. From the looks of his father’s records, she must have had her hands full with all of that.
The place wasn’t what he imagined.  He wasn’t sure why, but he almost expected Jonathan to live in a cold empty place with the bare essentials.  Maybe it was because he used to live in the barn to keep him separate from the bunkhouse as a kid, but it was strange seeing the place so intentionally decorated.
Decorated might have been a slight exaggeration.  Still, the layout was certainly something that was thought out and not just a bunch of furniture thrown together.  That wasn’t to say there was much there.  Jonathan wasn’t the type to spend money frivolously.  It wasn’t his style.
There was a grey couch in the middle of the room with a lighter rug beneath it, across from the wood burning stove.  A few blankets were meticulously placed over the top of the couch and the armchair off to the side of the couch.  There was some artwork– photos of the ranch.  Had Jonathan taken these himself?  That would be new.  Jonathan didn’t really have any hobbies when Steve was still living at home.  He didn’t have hobbies at all.
There was something remarkably welcoming about the space.  Steve almost wanted to curl up on the couch under a blanket while the wood burned in the stove across the room.
Oh.
Right.
How could he be so stupid?  This was a proper den.  It made sense for Jonathan to have a den.  He was an alpha with his own home.  He should have had a space for a potential omega to feel welcome, secure, and make a nest in.

“Why would he have that much power?” Tommy asked.
They were at his place– as they were more often than not.  It was a two bedroom high rise that he shared with a friend, Carol.  They had more than enough room for privacy.  Besides, he got the feeling Robin wasn’t thrilled having Tommy over there place at the time.
Steve was pacing a bit, complaining about how in the past week, Robin had been called in for shoots multiple days, and Steve was only given one day– with only two garment bags.  He just knew Byers had something to do with it.
It was one thing for him to only make it into the first catalog he did one time.  That was essentially a trial and they needed someone last minute.  This was different.  He wasn’t expecting to be one of the most featured models, but he was hoping for a little more work.
“He’s close with the editor,” Steve said, pushing his hair back from his face in frustration.

Steve stormed into the stable.  Jonathan and Nancy were closing up one of the stalls when Steve stomped up to them furiously.  Jonathan gave him a bewildered expression before Steve started yelling.
“What the actual fuck is your issue?” Steve snapped.  His blood was boiling .  He couldn’t believe Jonathan would sink this low.  The only reason it wasn’t Jonathan fucking him against the barn the night before was because he turned him away the previous night.  Steve wasn’t going to offer himself up on a silver platter a second time.  He didn’t get to be angry that Eddie had taken him up on his offer.
Jonathan’s brow furrowed.  “What are you talking about?  Wait… what happened to your face?  Did… did he do that?”

Steve liked Argyle.  He was a little out there, but who wasn’t.  He was friendly, kind, and he had the strongest strain of pot Steve ever had the pleasure of smoking.  All the concerns about his performance at the shoot just floated away.
He felt like he was floating too.  Weightless.
A giggle bubbled out of him as he leaned his head against Robin’s shoulder.  Argyle had said something funny.  He just couldn’t remember what it was.  It didn’t matter.
The door opened and Jonathan Byers walked in.

Having to talk to Tommy was about as appealing as a hole in the head.  Steve was toying with a letter opener as his brother went on about some of the people that were at odds with their father.  It wasn’t a particularly long list.  People tried not to make an enemy of him if they could help it.
“There’s this new one in town,” Tommy said, leaning back in the desk chair.  “We haven’t figured out his angle yet.  Martin Brenner.  He runs a resort out east– probably not too far from your neck of the woods.”
Steve’s face was stone, unmoving as he listened to Tommy.  “I’ve heard of him.  He probably wants to expand.”

“You’re gonna love everyone,” Robin said.  She was practically buzzing as they walked over to the studio.  “Well… almost everyone.”
This was the first day of Steve’s time working as an official member of the catalog team.  This meant that at least he’d have some distance between himself and Byers.  He’d get to actually meet some other models and see how the process is supposed to go.  In honesty, he was kind of looking forward to it.
Hanging out with Tommy was great.  He was patient and didn’t pressure Steve to do anything beyond some light makeout sessions– though Steve was hoping to take things to the next level sooner than later.  The one issue was that was the only thing he was doing when Robin was too busy with school.  This was going to give him a chance to do something outside of Tommy– and a bit outside of Robin too.

Thanks for the tag @clownrosary
favorite color: orange and purple
last song: I've been listening to the new Djo album on repeat, so probably one of those songs (probably Link or Charlie's Garden).
currently reading: I'm actually rereading the Hunger Games series right now!
currently watching: I just finished the new season of You.
currently craving: oh, man... vanilla ice cream? With rainbow sprinkles and gummy bears (b/c I have the pallet of a two year old)
coffee or tea: Okay so, I used to run a coffee shop inside a retail establishment, so I really like both. But I've been trying to cut out caffeine a bit as a result of the mild addiction caused by working at said coffee shop. That said, lately, I've been more into tea.
