Fuck It, I'm Having A Weird Night
Clark Ashton Smith stories I've read, ranked
1.) The Charnel God. 10/10. Beautiful and tense and enchanting from start to finish. My favorite type of horror AKA horror that melts into another genre (here, high fantasy) so completely they're nigh-indistinguishable. Dark fantasy at it's finest. A nobleman flees the downfall of his house, and he and his betrothed seek refuge in a tavern in a foreign city. When his betrothed lapses into a mild coma, she's whisked away to the temple of a mysterious god who devours the dead. Breaking ancient and sacred laws, he descends into the maze of subterranean tombs to steal her back. Side plot with pervy necromancers. Shithead innkeeper cameo. Flawless ending. I love this setting, I am OBSESSED with this god, I just--GOD, please read the Charnel God.
2.) Moving on from that fit of personality I was having there, we have The Demon of the Flower! Is it high fantasy? Science fantasy? Science fiction? Horror-Science-Fantasy? Who knows! What I do know is that, on a distant world, evil, sapient flowers with strange abilities rule over a broken and terrified human slave caste who are forced to worship the flowers and offer human sacrifices. One king-priest seeks to slay the flower that has demanded his fiancee as a sacrifice. I love this setting. I love this plot. I love this everything. Also 10/10, plus, it gets a bonus prize for best title.
3.) The Isle of the Torturers. FUN FUN FUN. This is PURE, whumpy, make that man SUFFER fun, and I wanna write a whole fucking book about it. Straight grimdark fantasy. A young king flees his country after a magical plague wipes out nearly everyone else. A storm wrecks his ship on the shores of an island who's inhabitants love to torture people. That's. That's IT. They torture everyone who shows up there! It is. Amazing. This stupid racist bat looked me dead in the eye and went "yo Rex, what if an entire county was just violent sexual sadists?" and it fucking rules. 9/10.
4.) The Weaver In the Vault. Second best title. I sing it in my head to the tune of Farmer In The Dell. This beautiful piece of work is dark adventure fantasy, another chocolate-and-peanut-butter genre blend. Three men are sent by their king to go tomb-raiding in a cursed city to retrieve a magic mirror for the insanely hot sorceress he married. Things go terribly wrong and I was ENTHRALLED. If possible, get your hands on the "audio movie" recorded with Reg Green as the narrator. Stunning. 9/10.
5.) The Last Incantation. Very first CAS story I read and honestly, it rules. Zothique is a future continent: this story is instead set in Earth's distant path, in the last remaining scrap of civilization left after Atlantis crumbled. The main character, the evil and semi-immortal wizard Malygris, is a recurring figure in this cycle of stories and TBH he's my favorite of Smith's characters. Here, he's using some ill-advised magic to see his long-dead lover again. Short and sweet, awesome setting, 8/10, wish it was longer </3
6.) The Disinterment of Venus. This story is set in Averoigne, a fictional province of France. It has a very different atmosphere to most of his other stories, reading more like the kind of ghost stories I read in my middle school's library...just obviously way sexier. Monks dig up a hot statue and it drives them insane with lust. Airtight plot arc, perfect ending, and the setting is a lovely example of this dead douchebag's range. 8/10
7.) The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis. Another non-Zothique story! This time, we're tomb-raiding on Mars! Framed as the debriefing report of the only survivor of an expedition to a Martian necropolis. Wonderful monsters, rich setting, and has my favorite thing: an alien planet whose indigenous people have more than one ethnicity/race. 8/10.
8.) The Empire of the Necromancers. Finally, I'm home. I can't stay away, I love this shitty continent and the shitty people in charge of it. Two necromancers travel to a dead empire and move into the palace, where they raise up its dead citizens as slaves. The enslaved corpses of the empire's first and last rulers team up to stop them. This is the plot of a platformer game and I kinda love it. This was the first Zothique story ever published, and that's perfect, because it encapsulates one of the key themes of this entire cycle of works: Zothique is obsessed with its collective past and therefore spoils their collective future. The sun is dying, the world is drowning, magic eats your soul but your children still starve. 8/10, I should have ranked it higher.
9.) The Tale of Satampra Zeiros. Second one I ever read. This ancient setting is the continent of Hyperborea, and the plot is yet more plundering. Satampra tells you the story of his last attempt at thiefdom in a dead city hidden deep in the jungle. Scary gods, purple bats, and a narrator with a sense of humor. I had fun with every page. 8/10.
10.) The Weird of Avoosl Wuthoqquan. Another story in Hyperborea. This time, a greedy jerk pursues stolen emeralds loooooooong past when it becomes obvious that he should stop. 7/10
11.) The Abominations of Yondo. A man is left for dead in a blighted wasteland infested with alien beasts and unnatural monsters. Like all who ventured to Yondo before him, he turns back, unable to bear the horrors of the wilds. Delightful little catalogue of gross monsters. 7/10.
12.) The Nameless Offspring. Set in England, and overall a much more Lovecraft-esque in terms of atmosphere. Like I can better see their mutual influence on each other; I must grudgingly acknowledge how cool that is. Our narrator is unwittingly entangled in a family's demonic drama and must face a bloodthirsty ghoul if he wants to survive the night. Reminds me of something my parents would have played for me from the psuedopod podcast and that I'd have thought about weekly for years. Wish teenaged me had read this. 6.5/10
13.) Necromancy In Naat. Zothique has the most fucked up islands of any place ever. Uccastrog is full of assholes who torture people, Naat is full of necromancers. Tragic love story that I mostly enjoy for it's world building, and the fact that the way the ghouls are used by the necromancers echoes the way Haitian zombies were said to be used by their masters. 6/10 ending weak af.
14.) The Witchcraft of Ulua. This is the daughter of the dumbass king and hot ass queen of "Weaver", and she's every bit the witch her mother was. She tries to enchant her father's new cup-bearer, but the young man is protected by his great uncle's sorcery. My favorite thing about this is just seeing the court of Tarsuun. 5/10
15.) The Mother of Toads. A young man is tricked into having sex with a hag. When he later spurns her, she seeks terrifying vengeance. This did not engage me, but I prefer CAS when he's writing about cursed tombs and vengeful mummies. This one was never gonna win my heart. 5/10
16.) The Maze Of Maal Dweb. On an alien world, a young barbarian attempts to rescue his kidnapped love from the evil wizard that has abducted her. I WANT to like this SO BAD. It's like...it's SO Flash Gordon, it's SO Conan the Barbarian, it's just a NEAT setting but. It's not structurally strong, in my opinion. The ending feels unfinished and it's a bit of a let down. Wonderful setting, as always, and Maal himself is intriguing, in the glimpses we're given of him. This might have benefited from more time: pity CAS didn't really "do" novels. 5/10.
17.) The Uncharted Isle. I did not finish the uncharted isle. Fuck the uncharted isle. -3/10.

Hey everyone:
Stuff continues to be expensive, and, after much deliberation, I have decided to open up emergency commissions. I will be taking five individual commissions of word counts up to 7k each. My current prices remain 2 US dollars for every 50 words. So 7k is 140, 5k is 100, 3k is 60, etc etc. I'll likely need about a month or so of turnaround time, but I provide previews and updates.
My pinned post has my commission rules. DM me on here or on ko-fi if you're interested.

Just plugging my ko-fi! My job cut my pay by like...70 percent or more and we have a huge credit card bill from when we had to put our dog down a while ago.
