ADVICE FOR TEXANS!!!

Hi, I live in Texas, but im originally from Nebraska. We get pretty cold weather so here are some tips to staying safe and warm.

If you have power and running water at home:

Have your faucet dripping at all times. This prevents your pipes from freezing and eventually bursting. The running water keeps the water flowing and prevents it from freezing.

Keep all unnecessary electronics off and unplugged. Yes that includes the Wifi. Keeping things plugged in still uses electricity. Conserve as much as possible.

Stock up on nonperishable goods. If you power does go out, that means you cant cook. Nonperishables are things that you can eat without cooking.

If you have family members who are without power, take them in!! In some houses, they get to freezing tempuraters which can lead to death. Please keep your families safe.

If you have extra blankets, make sure to have them ready in case your power does go out.

If you are at home without power or running water:

Go stay with your family that does!! Even if that means leaving town. You want you and your family to be safe in these times.

If you dont have family you can stay with, find a hotel near a hospital. More likely than not, the hotel is on the same grid as the hospital and the city cant turn off that power grid.

If you dont have a place to stay, huddle with your family in the smallest room with little to no windows. Your body heat and extra blankets will quickly heat up the small area.

Make sure you have plenty of nonperishable food. Soup is good and fills you up quickly. It doesn't taste very good cold but its better than nothing.

Possibly check out nearby homeless shelters and see if they have any extra blankets or if they have power. They will help in anyway that they can!

These are crazy things happening for y'all and you dont know how to deal with it. Being safe and warm is very important. That includes driving.

When driving in the snow, its best to:

Drive where there are tread marks. It means people have driven safely there before.

Beware of dips in the snow. That can sometimes mean that someone got stuck there and couldn't get out without help. You dont want the same thing to happen to you.

Do NOT stop on a snowy hill. Your tires will most likely spin amd you'll go backwards. Thats bad.

DRIVE SLOW FOR GODS SAKE. I know a lot of you want to drive how you normally do, but you will crash and it wont be pretty. Snow is not the same as rain.

Just because the ground looks clear, there can still be black ice, ice that people cannot see. Its deadly because of how slippery it is.

If you are sliding on ice, DO NOT HIT YOUR BRAKES!! Your car will go out of control. Lightly pump your brakes and move with the car until you stop sliding or get to the shoulder.

Do NOT drive close to anyone else. Even if you are confident in your driving skills, you dont know how the other person drives. Them crashing could lead to you crashing.
