i know im biased and people are absolutely allowed to explore this story in different ways. but when people suggest a different sport for the yellowjackets i often think they're underestimating the fundamental soccer-ness of the show.

the hierarchy. the aggression. the themes of subsitution, particulary that which is an ill-fitting substitution; melissa/jeff for jackie, callie for wilderness baby, (possibly) alex for hannah, and the cat lmao. the positional partnerships; jackie and nat, mari and jackie, tai and shauna, van and lottie, lottie and laura lee, lottie and shauna, nat and mari. then you have the positional rotation in season 3 - nat coming centrally to fill the space jackie left. followed by shauna moving forward into the attack as melissa is subbed in for jackie, with melissa taking shaunas original position in the midfield as a playmaker - the person who encourages the violence in shauna, instigating a new way of 'playing'. misty being the equipment manager, who goes unnoticed but is irreplaceable in being the person to set up the game, and clean up afterwards: breaking the transponder, creating the hunt, and then helping nat to make the call for rescue. tai as the 8, the central playmaker, half defense half attack. half tai, half other tai, unable to function without balance. lottie as a 5, a defender, naturally protective, positioned to see the game in its entirety. van as the goalie, always so close to death, parrying balls away at the very last second, putting her body on the line for the others as she does in her final moments. the fundamental nature of the game - an ability to compartmentalise the aggression. fitting it into a game with 'the hunt' because then its contained (on the field vs off the field). the othering of javi, jackie, coach ben, and the researchers, fair game to let die/rig the cards against/kill because they're not one of them (anymore). they're the 'opposition'. vs mari, one of their own, their teammate. her death symbolising a complete degradation of the rules of the "game" as they understand them.

messing around with AUs of them playing other sports is fun like go ahead i love it. but just know it would change literally everything.
