DESIGN FESTIVAL - DIGITAL
The group saga continues. Brief: You and your team are to continue your amazing campaign for your design festival across digital platforms. This includes creating a web presence and an introductory animation. The website will be used as an informative and marketing device, detailing the festival and its events. Most of the visual elements will have already been designed in Part A, though some modifications or additions may be necessary to fit the new format. The introductory video will be screened on stage while your guests are waiting for the show to begin. It should be considered to be an extension of your previous work and be animated in any way you think appropriate. Deliverables: Website Wireframe Intro Video

Week 8 - Group presentation
Below are the slides that accompanied the presentation. Here we see the icons and logos used across each deliverable.
“Welcome to MAKE Design Festival. The festival for designers, creators, makers and innovators...”
Logo design - primary and secondary choices
Inspo - layout, colour, texture.
Poster mock up - 3 variables to be used
Ticket idea
Instagram tiles...
T-shirt design...
Banner idea...
Program/brochure - booklet
Totebag design...
Itinerary brief...
Speakers - decided to try a illustrative approach as opposed to ye’ old photographic bio pieces.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I found the presentation incredibly helpful in order to gain greater insight into what was effective and what could be worked on/ changed or made more dynamic. It was already evident to myself when putting the presentation together that I ran out of steam/creative thinking when it came to placing the iconograpghy and logo across the variety of deliverables. It was incredibly repetitive but not in the sense that it was conducive or consistent, just boring. Some suggestion to work towards were filling in the white space with more colour - like a festive, fun party on the page perhaps. More confetti elements. And if time allowed, rework some of the illustrations of the speakers by removing some lines and details on the teeth and skin.

Week 7/8 Preliminary drafts for icon work...
Abbie’s explorations
My own attempts

The experimentation phase was integral in understanding how colours worked and blended when implementing a range photoshop effects. It wasn’t until the third attempt of the image above that I begun to understand what colours, textures and effects I needed to work with in order to get the outcome i wanted.
Above were the initial colours i played with. These colours then began to transform once the blending effects started to take place. Effects used: Multiply, colour, exclusion and some clipping masks. What evolved was a technicoloured dreamscape and the coming together of what would essentially become the icons for our festival. Here was the result of a exploratory process.

Mid -Semester Break
Group Meeting
During the break we met up to discuss the feedback given from the group presentation. Here we are having the time of lives...

Changing up the colours to be brighter and bolder and somehow risograph-like in appearance. This may take a bit of working as colour has not been an element I often explore since my main body of work comprises of black and white imagery. However it was a challenge I was looking to take on, and hopefully master, in order to provide some examples for us to consider for the final work.
This was a preliminary attempt at colour/ texture and working with shapes in Illustrator - it felt incredibly confusing and unnatural and I further questioned what the point of simple abstract forms truly meant to the overall festival feel.
What was it we were really going for? How did abstract, organic shapes relate to design, other than looking aesthetically appealing/ a trending element. It was through this contemplation that I suggested we we turn these shapes into something recognisable that was inline with design and making/makers to tie it all in. This was the initial sketch up of the idea...

In short - The hand/s represents the making and doing within the design practice. out of the head and into the hands. The head reflects design thinking and communication. The eye, a symbol of observation, understanding perspective and thinking made visible. We all agreed this was a good alternative to the shapes for the poster design, placing greater emphasis on the design itself through elements of design. So off we went to explore the concept further - adding colour and texture along the way... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We also decided to add two new speakers into the line-up for MAKE Design Festival.
