I use to think that stories about women breast feeding in public, being tutted at by strangers, were lies. I thought no one could seriously be against someone feeding their baby. I was proven wrong today. Many factors were already stressing me out and pushing me to my limit, and then this woman topped it off. The other day, we went out for a meal to Frankie and Bennies. I always knew I wanted to feel comfortable breast feeding in public without having to cover up. But I just did not feel comfortable feeding him in there... Even though there was only one other group of people in there. The atmosphere was not inviting. So I fed him in the car with blacked out windows. We went to Costa today, and I felt comfortable to whap it out straight away. No hesitation from me and no hesitation from Sebastian. There was plenty of space, plenty of light, plenty of cake, and plenty of other families with young babies. I felt like I had moral support from everyone who looked my way. I couldn't find anything yellow in Sebastian's wardrobe, but wanted to start teaching him that it's ok not to be ok. 2.5 weeks old is old enough to start this lesson. The way we talk to babies, eh? Helping with their communication skills. I could name a few adults who could do with talking to like this as well though. The calm was lasted for 5 seconds after the first video was recorded. And then the demand for milk started. Well, it had been 2 hours since his last feed. Went to @tgifridaysuk in derby today. I didn't know how comfortable I would be to breastfeed sebatian, but they blew me away from before we were even seated. The staff made sure they found us a table where our pram would fit. That's been am issue before in other restaurants, but in TGI there were plenty of family friendly tables. Instead of bunching in as many tables as possible, they left plenty of spaces for pushchairs. And the tables could be moved easily. So many times I've felt trapped between a chair and the table whilst feeding. They were totally casual when taking our order, with seb attached to my boob. They weren't cases at all. Made me feel very comfortable. And then to top it off, the lady next to me handed me this card as she left, to thank me for normalising breastfeeding. Something that has been made easier by the wonderful women on Instagram, promoting the sisterhood of breastfeeding in public. Finally seeing some big differences from the day he was born. Now he is 2 months old, his personality is coming through. We know what he likes, what soothes him, we can tell when he needs a nap, needs food, needs entertaining, needs fresh air, we know when he is over stimulated. How can these two pairs of trousers be the same size? Both have the label of 3-6 months, and yet the difference is massive. Some people tell me that full story books like this is too much for Seb, but I think variety is the spice of life...
