I think a lot of people forget that Tyler was sent to bootcamp by Donovan. And I don't know..I just feel like that is going to come back some how..Like that seems like a very important piece of information that was just quickly discarded.

I'm telling you..We're gonna be like deep into season 3 or something and he's going to be helping Wednesday come up with an all time masterclass military level raid plot, and all of a sudden Tyler's gonna turn into a whole military tactician and everybody's gonna be like..

When did he get so good at planning raids???

I'm getting ready to publish a novel. I've been wanting to write one since college, and it's taken way too long to finally have a story worth writing. The draft is done, I'm almost done editing, and it will go out to beta readers soon.

I couldn't have done it without fan fiction. The book itself is not fan fiction. It's an original story about a woman who discovers that she, along with a small percentage of the rest of the population, is descended from the fae. It deals with death and learning to open up to other people after trauma. It's probably the best thing I've written so far.

I'd like to share with you the three ways you can use fan fiction to become a better writer:

1. (Probably Obvious) Read a Lot of It

Fan fiction is as current as writing gets, and it features a diverse array of voices. The publishing industry is a mess right now, so if you want to write a book, you'll likely be self-publishing. Even if you just want to write better fanfic, reading what's out there is a great way to see what other people are doing right now. It's also good for seeing what you love and hate in writing.

I've read some godawful shit, and it made me a better writer because I could think about it and ask what I didn't like. Was it too repetitive? Too trope-y? Too descriptive? Not enough? Physically impossible? Reading bad writing is actually a path to better writing if you can figure out why it's bad.

2. Write Trash No One Will Ever See

While it's brave to post your very first writing to Ao3, start small. Write self-indulgent garbage. Ship yourself with your favorite character. Write one-shots. Write nonsense. Squirrel it away where it'll never see the light of day. Go back to it later and cringe so hard you fold in half. Each new thing you write will be better. I probably wrote four different multi-chapter stories before I wrote anything I was willing to show other people.

3. Finally, Post Something on Ao3

It can be scary to put your work out there, but I'm really glad I did. The first story I put on Ao3 was supposed to be a one-shot, but it got such a lovely response, and so many people asking for more, that it blossomed into a whole story. The encouragement and community I found there and here helped me keep going and improve even more as a writer. It gave me the confidence I needed to finally write a book, which may even become a series.

So if you want to be a better writer, don't dismiss fan fiction. Writing is writing, and it might be just what you need.
