The thing that strikes me about Shauna and her paranoia is: yeah, as an adult, she does tend to be wrong. Catastrophically so. But as a teenager? As a teenager, her instincts usually lead her true. Even if she isn’t technically a hundred percent correct, she does find that paranoia keeps her safe. Keeps her subjects where she wants them. Keeps her attention more or less where it needs to be. So, yeah, she’s paranoid—because she’s been taught that this is the best way forward, the way to keep her crown and her power. It’s just that New Jersey isn’t her kingdom, and she hasn’t quite learned to pivot.
