okay i know you said you were inspired to write this new fic from reading the expanse, but i have to know if some of your inspiration came from firefly, because it felt sooo similar (van as wash wearing all those hawaiian shirts would be so chefs kiss) especially how lottie’s craziness was explained feeling so similar to river. anyways i loved it immensely <3

Mostly it was The Expanse, but I'm sure every sci-fi thing I ever touch will harken back a little bit to Firefly. I def felt the River parallels with Lottie, though if I expand on that world, I do plan on veering away from a 1:1 there. But yeah, I'm glad you dug it! I could see myself adding little vignettes here and there to that AU, it has a lot of potential for fun and activities.

It’s a cabin in the grand expanse of space. It’s toothpicks and turmoil. It’s home, and she loves it the way she loves only a few other things.

Just thinking today about how Shauna projects a mean-girl you're nothing without me energy on Jackie, despite the fact that we've never seen Jackie really act that way. Like, even when she was being harsh toward Shauna, she's stumbling over it. She's quoting Beaches. It's awkward, like it doesn't come naturally. But in Shauna's memories, dreams, hallucinations, Jackie is so vicious and cold.
Just thinking about how Shauna behaves toward Melissa in particular. How she is absolutely living the mean-girl you're nothing without me energy. How it does come naturally, almost like she can't contain it, like this is all she knows how to be.
Just thinking about how Shauna's projection onto Jackie isn't Jackie at all. Not only is it the manifestation of her own guilt re: Jackie's death--it is the manifestation of her own guilt re: her own treatment of Melissa. The Jackie who smiles coldly and tells her I'm the most interesting thing about you isn't Jackie. Isn't even Melissa.
It's Shauna.
