There are two versions of the iPhone 7 - and one is way slower

Some iPhone 7s use a Qualcomm modem, while others have an Intel modem. That distinction could make a difference in how fast an iPhone 7 Plus can send messages and load your favorite app. A new report from Cellular Insights found that the Qualcomm modem performed 30% better than Intel’s. The researchers only tested the iPhone 7 Plus, but the two types of modems are also used in the iPhone 7.

So how do you make sure you don’t end up with the slower iPhone? If you have a Verizon, Sprint or SIM-free model, you’re in good hands, according to the Cellular Insights report. Another preventive measure is to make sure you buy your phone in the United States, China or Japan. Those are the only countries where the speedy Qualcomm version is sold.

Yet not every iPhone purchased in the U.S. has the faster modem. iPhones from T-Mobile, AT&T and Telstra include the Intel modem.

To determine if your iPhone has the Intel modem, check the model number, found in small print on the back of your smartphone. The Intel modem is in Model A1778 and Model A1784.

While the Intel modem is slower, it may not be slow enough to bother users. Cellular Insights ran comparison tests, showing that the Intel-powered iPhone 7 Plus was in the ballpark of the iPhone 6S in areas with poor reception.

It’s unclear why Apple is offering iPhones with two different speeds. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Some reports have suggested that by shifting some of its modem business to a Qualcomm competitor, Apple gains leverage to extract better prices from Qualcomm.

Fix a Missing Camera Icon on iPhone After iOS Update

A handful of iPhone users have discovered their Camera app icon has gone missing after updating iOS to the latest version. Why the Camera mysteriously disappears after updating iOS isn’t always clear, but it’s typically an easy fix using one of the methods outlined below.

Check Camera Restrictions

Some iOS users have discovered the Camera app has been disabled through the devices Restrictions, preventing the camera icon from appearing on the home screen and also from being accessed from other applications.

Open the Settings app and go to “General” followed by “Restrictions”

Enter the passcode when requested and then locate “Camera”, be sure it’s turned to the ON position – you may need to toggle this OFF and then back ON again, but be sure it’s ON

Go back to the home screen and see if Camera icon appears, it should be there.

Why this randomly gets turned off isn’t clear, but its’ likely that users either disabled the camera at some point or perhaps were hiding other apps and included the Camera app erroneously. Some users report this happened without any user intervention, which is a curious observation.

Reset the Screen Icon Layout

You may have inadvertently stuffed the camera icon into another folder or on a distant page, if so you can reveal it again by resetting the home screen icon layout:

Open Settings and go to General

Select the “Reset” option and tap on “Reset Home Screen Layout”

Return to the Home Screen, the Camera icon should be visible in the upper right corner.

Still Missing Camera Icon? Backup & Restore

If you’ve done the above and you’re still missing the Camera icon, you should backup and restore your device. This is fastest with iTunes:

Connect the iPhone to the computer and open iTunes

Choose to “Encrypt Backup” (this saves the passwords on the device) and then choose to “Back Up Now”

Once the backup is completed, choose the “Restore” option and restore the device from the backup you just made

If your iPhone Camera is still missing at this point, you may have a hardware issue that is not related to updating iOS. If you suspect a hardware problem is causing your camera to go missing, you should visit an Apple Store or call an official Apple Support line to have a hardware problem remedied.

How to Downgrade from iOS 9 Back to iOS 8.4.1

Want to downgrade iOS 9 back to iOS 8.4.1? You can do that, as long as you move fairly quickly. If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has been updated to iOS 9 and decided it’s not for you for whatever reason, you can revert back to the prior release. Maybe you felt the update runs slower, maybe a necessary app isn’t yet compatible with the new iOS, or maybe you just preferred the prior version of iOS, the reason for downgrading doesn’t matter.

A few things to keep in mind here: downgrading only works as long as Apple signs the prior version of iOS, which is typically a short window. Also, you can’t restore an iTunes backup from a new version of iOS to an older version of iOS, so you may lose your data by doing this. You can try an iCloud backup which tends to be a bit more lenient for versions, but it’s not a guarantee. By downgrading and staying on the prior version, you may have to accept losing For the best results, you’ll move quick enough to be able to restore an iOS 8.4.1 backup you made previously to the iOS 8.4.1 device.

Before doing anything else, be sure to download iOS 8.4.1 IPSW which matches your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch model. You will need that IPSW file, a USB / Lightning cable, and iTunes to get started. You should also make a backup of your device as it is now if you haven’t already done so.

Downgrading iOS 9 to Revert Back to iOS 8.4.1

On the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the ‘Settings’ app and go to iCloud,then turn off “Find My iPhone”

Turn off the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch by holding down the Power button

Launch iTunes on the computer

Connect the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch to the computer using the USB cable, then immediately start holding down the Power and Home button together for 10 seconds, then release the Power button but continue holding the Home button – when a message in iTunes appears saying a device in recovery mode has been detected you are ready to start the downgrade process

Select the iOS device iTunes and go to the “Summary” screen

You’re going to press the “Restore” button with a modifier key:

on Mac OS X, OPTION click that Restore button

on a Windows PC, SHIFT click the Restore button

Navigate to the iOS 8.4.1 IPSW file you downloaded beforehand and select it

Let the downgrade process complete before interacting with the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you’ll know it’s finished because the device will be at the new setup screen, as if it were a new device

Now you’re back on iOS 8.4.1, you can restore the device from a backup made from iOS 8.4.1, but as mentioned earlier, you can not restore an iOS 9 backup to an iOS 8.4.1 device from iTunes.

Is there an advantage to staying on iOS 8.4.1 versus updating to iOS 9 or iOS 9.1? This is largely a matter of user preference, but sometimes there are apps that work in some versions of iOS and not others, and sometimes a new version of iOS can be more sluggish than a prior version was. Keep in mind that you can always update the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 9 or iOS 9.1 again in the future if you change your mind.

How to Resize Multiple Images at once on Mac

If you are trying to put a number of images on a website or a place where they all need to be of the same size, you may not want to go through the hassle of opening each of them in an image editor and resizing them manually. What if there was a way for you to resize multiple images at once with a few quick clicks? Well, you do have a way.

In Mac, you can get multiple images resized all at once using one of the built-in apps on your machine. It helps you save a lot of time that you would otherwise spend editing images individually in an image editor.

Resizing Multiple Images at Once on Your Mac

We are going to use the Preview app to get the task done.

1. Copy all the images that you want to resize into a single folder for you to easily select them in the rest of the steps.

2. Press “Command + A” to select all the images in the folder. Right click on any one image and select “Open With” followed by “Preview.” It will launch all the selected images in the Preview app on your Mac.

3. When Preview launches, you need to select all the images for manipulation. To do that click on “Edit” followed by “Select All.” It will select all the images in the Preview for you to modify their size.

4. When all the images inside Preview are selected, click on “Tools” followed by “Adjust Size…” It will resize the selected images.

5. As soon as you click the option in the above step, you will see a dialog box letting you input the new size for the images. You can enter both height and width of the images in many measure units including pixels, percent, inches, cm, mm, and points.

The most commonly used measure unit for images, though, is pixels. Make sure to checkmark the “Scale proportionally” option so that your images do not look weird.

It should also let you know the resulting file size of the images. That way you will know how much memory space you are saving by resizing the images.

When you are done entering the new size, click on “OK.”

6. All of your images will be resized instantly. You should be able to see them all resized as per your instructions right away in the Preview app itself.

If you are not happy with the resized images, you can always use the “Adjust Size” feature to adjust their sizes.

Hackers stole $47 million out of tech company's accounts

A tech company has made an unusual admission to its investors: A hacker posed as one of its employees online and stole $46.7 million from the company’s accounts.

Networking firm Ubiquiti said an “outside entity” targeted its finance department by sending what appeared to be a company email.

The fake emails duped employees into turning over their usernames, passwords and account numbers. Then the hacker was able to transfer funds out of a Ubiquiti subsidiary in Hong Kong to other overseas accounts that the hacker held.

The company gave few other details about the hack in a regulatory filing last week. The story was first reported by security blog KrebsOnSecurity.

Ubiquiti said it determined that it had been a fraud victim on June 5, and it immediately called the subsidiary’s bank. It was able to recover $8.1 million of the money that the hacker stole, and Ubiquiti believes it will be able to get back at least $6.8 million more.

The company said it is working with U.S. and overseas law enforcement to retrieve the remaining $31.8 million. The company’s filing did not say who the perpetrator may have been.

It’s frighteningly easy to pull off such a theft. Many email systems allow people to spoof email addresses, posing as someone they’re not. For example, a quick LinkedIn search can reveal who a company’s trusted finance department members are.

As security blogger Brian Krebs noted on his blog, the hacker could have easily created a dummy email address that fooled the finance department ([email protected] or [email protected]), for instance. After emailing employees, a person hitting “reply” quickly without paying attention could have responded to the hacker’s dummy email address.

The FBI said that last year, businesses lost $215 million to similar email scams.

Following an internal audit, Ubiquiti said there’s no evidence that the hackers made off with any intellectual property, personal information of employees or any other financial information. The investigation also concluded that it wasn’t an inside job — the hackers were outsiders.

The audit found that Ubiquiti’s hacking prevention methods were ineffective, and it has “implemented enhanced internal controls over financial reporting” since June 5.

The company said it doesn’t expect the loss to be material to its business.
