I've been thinking about what might have happened if the roles in Parallels Universe had been reversed. Deb and Dave both see future echoes of themselves with twins in the Smegazine comics, so I think it could have happened. In this case, Deb Lister gives birth to twin girls, Jan and Becky, who start aging quickly and have to be taken to their dad's universe instead. I don't know if are would have still had a kid with Ace in this case. Who knows? She would figure out a way to visit at least.

Dave is surprised and woefully unprepared, but he adores them. Rimmer takes a much longer time to warm up to them, but he gets there. He gets along a bit better with Jan, who develops an interest in machines, but he still models ties for Becky and let'ls her paint his nails. He never passes his astronavs, but he helps Jan study to get her engineering certification. Becky's favorite person in the universe is the Cat. Unlike Jan, she doesn't mind being used as a clothing model, but she demands suits instead of dresses from age 8 onward. If she had a vision board, Janelle Monae and Amber Ruffin would take up most of it. She's a very skilled tailor and jewelry maker.

Finally an excuse to write my new Rimmer Ego character

Universal-Refusal or something. Still in development.

You ever wonder if our Rimmer, after leaving to become the next Ace, eventually settled into the role, played the part, had all the sex and adoration he dreamed of having, but deep down, never felt at ease with it?

Like he never truly "becomes" Ace, he plays the part. Plays it to perfection, saves galaxies, but is never comfortable with it.

What if becoming Ace has been both the best and worst thing that ever happened to him? He's become the capable man worthy of respect he always wanted, but has become deeply unhappy and lonely the longer it went.

No amount of sex and fawning over him could replace genuine companionship and friendship.

Could never replace the knowledge and security of knowing you have people right in the next room who, in spite of all the bickering and insults, wouldn't hesitate to come to your rescue when push came to shove.

Could never replace Cat, Kryten and Lister.

In his career as Ace, he's dimension and time jumped so much, it's a question if he could ever find them again. Would they still be alive? But whenever he entertains the thought, one harsh reminder stays his hand.

He needs to be Ace until his impending death forces him to find another Rimmer to continue the legacy.

He would never see his crew, his version of the crew, ever again.

And it gnaws on him until he joins the ring of former Ace Rimmer light bees around the planet.
