Women in Tech Program
Tumblr media
NYC Digital and the NYC Department of Education recently hosted Women in Tech, which introduced female students from the City's public schools to some of the New York City's local tech companies. Students met with women working in various technology roles, and learned about a variety of career opportunities in the tech industry. More than 300 female students from 14 New York City public schools visited a local tech companies, including AOL/Huffington Post, AT&T, Etsy, Facebook, GE, General Assembly, Gilt Groupe, Google, Rent the Runway, Shutterstock, Tumblr, Twitter, XO Group and Yahoo!.
Visits to the tech companies featured office tours, breakout groups for students to connect with mentors and participate in one-on-one discussions with industry leaders, and panels where students had the opportunity to ask questions and hear firsthand from women in engineering, design, project management, entrepreneurship, and a variety of other positions in tech.
From my vantage point, it was incredibly empowering for the girls to get to see women doing this work at a high level, and to see a workplace unlike any other they've seen. My kids rarely get out of the South Bronx and seeing something like that expands their minds incredibly. - SEP Teacher, MS 223: The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology, visit to Google
I just felt that Alex gave me a sort of inspiration to really put effort into software engineering and plus when she said that she loved her job I imagined myself possibly in the future saying that. and I'm really excited to see where this takes me. - Student
In addition to Women in Tech, the City has developed a wide range of programs that provide professional development opportunities to students and build diversity in the tech sector. Since 2012, the City has connected over 300 high school and college students from diverse backgrounds with internships at technology companies in New York City. Learn more about these programs in New York City's Digital Leadership 2013 Roadmap.  Participating schools include Middle Schools: Mark Twain I.S. 239, Brooklyn; Middle School 223: The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology, Bronx; Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School 74, Queens; Ditmas Intermediate School, Brooklyn. And High Schools: Academy for Software Engineering, Manhattan; Cambria Heights Academy, Queens; Quest to Learn, Manhattan; Ralph R. McKee High School, Staten Island; Bronx Compass High School, Bronx; the Renaissance Charter High School for Innovation, Manhattan; Bronx Academy for Software Engineering, Bronx; High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology School, Brooklyn; Urban Assembly Gateway for Technology High School, Manhattan; Pathways College Preparatory School, Queens.
