What makes World Oarfish Day special? It's the oarfish. Obviously. But right after all of them, it's all of you. Every year it's a great day, but we think this year has been the best yet.

Thanks for joining us. Thanks for holding our metaphorical hands and/or lobate fins and contemplating the awe-inspiring, the mysterious, the beautiful, the sublime. We also want to thank the rest of the Global Oarfish Council, our supporters, and our benefactor.

We hope you'll join us next year. And if we may be so bold, we even hope you'll even think of the oarfish time to time in the rest of the year. That you'll cast your eye towards the nearest coastline and you'll think, oh my goodness, that fish is enormous.

did you know? today is world oarfish day! i recently found out oarfish eat krill, and this reminded me of a game i play quite frequently, called Sky: Children of the Light. in this game, there are hostile creatures called Dark Dragons, but the sky community usually refers to them as krill. i thought itd be fun to add oarfish to sky, to roam golden wasteland and attack the krill, so! for world oarfish day, i have drawn this! oarfish in the style of sky's giant light creatures! i think itd fit in pretty well with sky's mantas and whales

two color versions! one with a blue background, cause i think it looks better, and one with a green background, to fit the color scheme of golden wasteland, which is probably the area these guys would inhabit.

plus a close up of the head fins, from when i was trying to figure out how i wanted to simplify the oarfish to better fit the designs of skys light creatures.

How can we help the oarfish?

We don't actually know. It's not clear that they're in any danger. A lot of marine life, particularly marine megafauna, is not doing super hot these days. This is due to multiple reasons, aforementioned super heat being merely one of them. But the oarfish is so rarely observed that we have very little sense of their lifestyles or challenges.

We know they eat krill, and krill populations are looking pretty bad right now, mostly due to climate change. So solving climate change would probably help the oarfish, all things considered.

But the Global Oarfish Council is not going to waste your valuable time declaring that we know the oarfish are in trouble and here's how to save them.

We could make some guesses but they would just be guesses. We're not about that.

Understanding comes before intervention.

The oarfish is the world's longest bony fish, growing at least 25 feet long. It lives in every ocean but is very rarely seen.

Every June 24 is World Oarfish Day, a public holiday to celebrate, appreciate, and raise awareness of this perfect and mysterious sea friend. World Oarfish Day is a project of the Global Oarfish Council.
