Broken promises and broken hearts

Au where Conan dies on a quest

Conan was packing his things, having been chosen to go on a quest with Leo, Percy, and Annabeth. One he was sure he’d come back from.

Conan notices the augur’s uneasy look on his face. Walking over and swinging his bag over his shoulder.

“What’s wrong?” Conan asked

“Nothing just.. stay safe alright?”

“Y’know I will, I always do,”

Octavian paused, still feeling unwell about this. But Conan’s warm smile eased his doubts. Placing his hand on Conan’s arm, his touch ever so gentle.

“Promise you’ll come back?”

“I promise.”

Unfortunately for both, Conan had broken that promise.

During their quest, while on a train. Cyclops had smelled the demigods on one of the carts. There were 2.. no 4.. from what Percy had explained. Nobody knew why there were so many in one place, there just was.

They were all stuck in the dining cart. Percy wasn’t near any water, Leo couldn’t use his powers without damaging the train or putting any mortal's lives in danger. The dining cart was completely empty so there was nothing for Annabeth to use. They had conveniently forgotten their weapons in their room in the train. They were stuck in a room, with no weapons, can’t use their powers, with 4 Cyclopes.

The Cyclopes were huge, almost 7 feet. All four of them surrounded the group. There was no way they’d make it out without doing anything that’d cause major problems. Conan only had one idea, yet he knew he wouldn’t make it out. But saving the other three was his top priority at the moment.

Conan had used his powers to throw the three into a different cart, sealing off the door with vines that couldn’t be cut down. The next thing they knew they broke down the door. The Cyclopes were gone, but there laid Conan’s lifeless body on the floor. Covered in injuries and blood. That once bright shine in his eyes was gone, replaced by an eerie emptiness.

Annabeth had cried till her throat hurt, cradling her brother's head in her lap. Leo had to shield his eyes from the gruesome sight, not bearing to see a person he had thought of as a father figure. Percy forced himself to look, trying to memorize every part of Conan's face, he didn’t want to forget what another friend looked like.

Returning to camp without Conan felt like a stab in the heart. Everyone was wondering where the perky son of Dionysus was. Usually when he camps back from quests he’d already be annoying people. But the three’s miserable expressions told exactly what happened.

When Octavian found out, he refused to believe it. Conan had promised he’d come back. Conan was strong, he wouldn’t have gone down just like that. But watching the burial shroud being burnt for the son of Dionysus, he couldn’t deny it much longer.

Annabeth had told Octavian Conan’s last words before sacrificing himself for their safety.

“Tell Octavian, I’m sorry I broke our promise.”

one of my favorite subtle implications in the series is that it seems the Titan Army was fully banking on Percy being the host of Kronos. Why else would they make their main base a cruise ship if their primary enemy is a son of Poseidon? Named after Andromeda, the wife of Perseus? Why would they work on Oceanus specifically being free so much? Side notably with other children of Poseidon? Why plant Zeus and Hades' items of power on Percy when Luke already had them? Why only Zeus and Hades' items, not Poseidon's? Well because they really need Percy as Kronos' host, that's why. (and Poseidon siding with them because of that would be a bonus as well)

I like to imagine Luke's cabin on the Princess Andromeda is fully decked out with like "WELCOME PERCY" and sea-themed sheets and everything and he hates it so much cause it's a constant reminder he failed and he was Kronos' second choice. Also then he gets his super special pegasus not even exactly stolen by Percy, but the pegasus willingly defects to be Percy's personal steed instead, which must just be insult to injury. Luke has immense one-sided beef with Percy and Percy has no idea.

AU where Octavian is the host for Gaia. Kinda like how Luke was the host for Kronos, but diff. The main difference is that it wouldn't be known to Octavian that she is basically controlling his thoughts.

Mm decided to go steal a certain plot point in Wings of Fire with the earring. As that's the thing that holds her (man idk I came up with this at 3 PM and it's 2 AM explaining it 💀, I am naut coming up with a good reason rn)

I can only think she's recouping herself so she can grow stronger without, while attaching herself to someone with a strong position in the Roman Camp so she can actively drive them apart. Heavy manipulation tactics there. Maybe faking certain prophecies to make him absolutely spiral with paranoia. She negatively influences how he socializes and takes care of himself, which is why he's described so skinny.

She doesn't want her host to have a proper support group, nor anyone to talk to, because that could ruin everything. He'd still be largely paranoid, and an absolute control freak, while having moments of where he simply can't explain why he's exactly thinking or acting this way. To everyone, his change in personality was abrupt and weird. And those strange moments of self-awareness makes it even weirder. But the damage has been done. And it'll only get worse.

I think all of this would be utilized and built up in books 2-3. We wouldn't be villianizing him or using unnecessary word language. He'd be described as uncertain, confused of what he's spouting, and overall unbearably unhealthy. Have some characters express worry over him PLEASE. Even if they don't like him in the first place. He doesn't take part in the War Games, and he's usually dismissive about any conversation. Gaia does what Octavian needs to live, then it's isolation again. It's clear she has him in a heavy, heavy hold. And it'll continue like it..

Until Gaia breaks out, of course, but that's a whole other thought to talk about.

(Yes this AU was an excuse to have a reason to really go in depth about Octavian angst.)
