Here’s something cool to do- shine a black light over your collection (taxidermy included) and see what glows! Biofluorescence is still wildly understudied when it comes to animals and how they use it, but in recent years we have discovered many (mostly nocturnal) mammals and birds that glow various colors when exposed to UV light. Black lights can show some interesting things on bones as well! To start, if you can’t tell if a bone has been repaired or not, use a black light! Paint/clay will glow bright purple. From my very very limited testing it appears teeth that have been exposed to chlorine bleach glow brighter than teeth that were whitened with peroxide. There’s also random skulls that glow, too! This timber rattlesnake for instance glows much brighter than the Asian black bear skull next to it. Try it out on your collection and comment if you find anything interesting!
