Thanks to the author, Evan Witmer and to Pax, who connected me to Evan to obtain a free copy of the book!

The format is a short profile of each cannibal followed by a story purportedly written by the cannibal. The profiles are my favorite part, and are only a couple pages long. So short, in fact, they’d be considered “flash fiction,” like the work of Etgar Keret, whose stories I love.

Evan has a compelling and original voice as a writer and these stories are delightfully creepy and often witty. Sometimes the stories feel a bit stream-of-consciousness or ethereal and drug-induced—non-linear. I found some of them harder to follow.

There is an absurdist quality to the writing, surreal and amusingly bohemian. At times, the character behavior reminded my of vintage Vonnegut, which is high praise!

My favorite profiles:

Isaac cone, who ate a woman’s neck to reclaim his soul that she had stolen from him.

Matthew Hoga, who belonged to a cannibal social club called People Serving People.

Joss Iger, a dark comic profile about a twin who ate his brother in the womb and became a standup comedian.

The epilogue is a wonderfully-clever venn diagram look at the intersection of vegetarians vs. vegans, vs. omnivores vs. cannibals. It’s really the perfect ending to this oddball anthology.

Evan seems to be a wonderfully eccentric fellow and I would be honored to one day chat with him over a goblet of blood and some barbecued intestines. 💀

In return for a credit in the front of the book, I was wondering if anyone out there would like to edit just one of the short stories in my new collection? My original editor got published and no longer has the time. The one story I have left to find an editor for is an acid western about a pair of cheese loving cowboys... any takers?

Review: Pages from The Pizza Crows by Evan Witmer.

I was fortunate enough to be sent a link to this book and able to give it a listen thanks to the author and I'm glad I got to give the book a chance.

From beginning to end this author introduces short stories that are surreal, but altogether cynically realistic as we delve into the worlds of incredibly human characters, no matter what the situation - especially situations with half horse/half unicorns, a particular story highlight of this book for me where we see those well formed, cynical characters this book provides. I really appreciate the unique tales and bizarre situations these characters are led into, leading to tales I've never even thought of, this author's imagination ran wild in this collection and it sure is one crazy ride from story to story within this book, with people fighting over their spouses and trying to keep away from their also cursed ex's, this book is funny and dark in some of the most incredible ways. A very odd but interesting collection, it is everything it sets out to be and more.

What are you currently reading? Do you like the book cover?

I am reading Digest: Ten Short Stories by Convicted & Plausible People-Eaters of Evan Witmer @oddfiction528. The book cover is simple and it says a lot in the plot of the stories inside. I’m not yet close to half of this book but so far, the events are goosebumps producers. 

Do you use bookmarks?

I use bookmarks when it is a physical book but since I read more e-book today, it is automatic to resume to where I left at.

Listen. I know that sometimes you think you’re wording things really nice and polite and all, but please just DO NOT leave “pls update soon” or “when’s the next chapter” comments! Ever! Saying “I don’t mean to sound rude” before a statement doesn’t automatically make it A) not rude or B) not hurt the author’s feelings. You have NO idea what a person could be going through to make them not update, it could be anything from a minor creative block to a major family tradgedy, just be polite and DON’T ASK these sorts of questions! Again, sometimes the wording comes across as polite and/or kind, but not all “when are you updating?” comments are polite. And it can REALLY do a number on an author’s self esteem/motivation. Because guess what. WE KNOW we haven’t updated in awhile. Trust me, we know. We haven’t forgotten. We probably think about the fact that we haven’t updated lately and feel guilty about it. These comments do not help. If anything, they make it worse for some people. 

If you love a story, by all means, leave a comment. Gush about your favorite parts, express your excitement about it, show your love. But PLEASE don’t ask for the next update or ask when the next update is. It costs zero dollars to be kind to your local fic writer.
