I believe you need the love in the mix for it to work as a version of Kara.

Valeria has a pretty consistent character trait where when she is faced with a large enough nail EVERYTHING starts looking like a hammer.

Including the lives of the people around her. Especially including HER life. But also including the life of Doctor Doom.

(A tangent: It's kinda funny you chose that OWUD scene as illustration because at the end of the scene he pulls something notably disrespectful on her. Maybe the most he ever has. He teleports her home instead of where he got her from, destroying her chance to meet Bentley and therefore count herself as Technically Not A Liar to her parents about that day's hangout plans.)

i've been reading a bunch of Marvel comics lately and my favourite thing i have discovered is that Doctor Doom is BFFs with a little girl.

why, i wondered.

was it a jason todd type situation? was she an abandoned street urchin caught up in his orbit somehow. NO. she has a legendarily loving and supportive family and various friends, actually, and she loves them back just fine.

comic book shenanigans forced them to bond? NO. it is the opposite that happens. (ok comic book shenanigans forced them to meet but that is not the same thing.)

inescapable family ties? NO. like, doctor doom tells everyone he is her godfather but he made that up! and even if he hadn't it is not a designation that requires you to hang out together!

does she treat him with the sort of deference a megalomaniacal supertyrant traditionally appreciates? NO. she does not believe he is the smartest one in any room they are in together and does not hide it. (normal kid behaviour tbh)

relationship of unconditional trust? NO. i mean, on some level, obviously, sure. he's promised to protect her. she'll be fine. but trusting him not to be constantly on his bullshit? NO. (and i really doubt his trust metre for her is very high either. that would be silly.)

they just… vibe.

it's so funny.

it's like. you know that old + tremendously unethical science experiment. Wire Mother/Cloth Mother. with the baby monkeys, and they test which "mom" the monkeys will spend time with. and it doesn't matter which fake mom has the milk bottle the result is ALWAYS cloth mother. ALWAYS.

I spent some time today trying to figure out why I'm stalled on it despite setting aside time and having preliminary stages of drafts for years (¯\_(ツ)_/¯), and I think what it comes down to is that.... I can't rotate Roxy & Callie in my mind. I just don't have a strong instinctual feel for their dialogue, and I haven't had the patience lately for grinding it out.

I did a very quick tweak to one panel, because looking at it when it wasn't last minute at midnight made me realize I did not do an adequate job conveying jane's emotional state on witnessing such a magnificent butt.

i will probably leave this april 1 post up for a couple days, since it is actually "canon" to mtm, whatever that means. Maybe it means I've been overlooking april fools day posts as a story telling tool instead of an excuse to be silly? Man I hope that's not it.
