Among the Rats

[a short idea I wrote for Franco + Trager]

Everyone called him the Doctor. He dealt with all the undesirables, all the dregs of society—the rats and the men left as lessons to the living. Mutilation and torture were his wheelhouse, and no man ever left that room in one piece.

Franco watched with a squint of his eyes as the Doctor wiped off his tools while casually whistling a tune the likes of which he couldn't place. "You almost finished here, Doc?" Franco growled, surly from the long wait.

Cleaning up the waste was a filthy fucking affair, but it had to be done.

A grin spread across the Doctor's thin face. "Patience is a virtue, buddy. Your mother ever teach you that?"

"Real fuckin' funny."

"Believe it or not, I was being serious. No one knows patience like the dead. It's the living that can't seem to stop their griping. Especially—" With a grunt, he heaved the hacked up torso into a garbage bag, pushing in the limbs and morsels after. "—when we're talking spineless little quitters like this."

Cutting to the chase, Franco stamped his foot and barked, "Did he give you anything or what?"

"Sure did. Two fingers in, and he was already squealing. Five, and you could even call us best friends. No secrets between us." He inspected the hacksaw closely for bloodstains, bringing it into the light. "Guy named Roberto. That ringing any bells?"

Franco clenched his hands into fists. "Motherfucker."

The Doctor chuckled. "Don't know about mothers, but he's probably getting his prick wet in some snatch as we speak."

With a scoff, Franco turned on his heels to leave when he heard the Doctor clear his throat from behind.

"Little help here?"

With a disgusted glare at the stuffed bag, Franco sneered, "Do I look like your errand boy? Take that shit out yourself."

"You know, it wouldn't kill you to lend a hand every now and again. You're headed out anyway, and I still gotta hose off in here."

"Yeah, you do." Franco crinkled his nose. "Smells like shit, Doc. Light a candle or somethin'. Jesus."

I'm veryyyy protective over my writing (even more so than my art!), so I always get nervous about sharing any of it.

But at the same time, I've got a ton of little scenes I've written that are kinda just... sitting around. So I miiiiight be tempted to share some of those on here? Maybe I'll add a little sketch or something with each scene I post 🤔

“It really just boils down to, excuse me.’ The body fell off the hospital bed with a thunk, Eddie’s gaze flicking towards it before returning to Trager who’d hopped up to sit. “What you’re really trying to accomplish.’

    What a ridiculous question. He wanted a bride.

    There had been many attempts before the police had arrested him, those squint eyed slabs of rotten pork. But every single time he’d found someone he thought would be the perfect fit, he’d just gotten his heart broken. It wasn’t his fault that values had taken a nose dive. Women wanted to be independent, and self sustaining. Why? Why would they want that when there were men like him willing to take that burden from their sweet, delicate shoulders.

“Hello? Hellooo?’

     Arms crossing, Eddie shrugged a shoulder. 

“Oh that’s very helpful, Eddie. Thank you so much for elaborating.’ Trager rubbed the spot between his eyebrows tiredly. “I mean, well, you have a good hand at it. Obviously a bit rough, but I’d say you were a natural at it.’

     He leaned to nudge the guillotine cutter still damp with his previous efforts, and the needles that lay beneath bent and crimson instead of silver. 

“I like the work with what you got kinda thing you have here, but maybe you’d like to come upstairs and get some proper tools?’ At the less than friendly look, he retracted the offer with both hands raised in a peace offering gesture. “Or not, do what you like. I’ll just give you a few, uh, tips on getting the tissue to act right and be on my way.’
