Wangxian Fic Recs Presents: Time Travel Fix-Its

Summary: A cultivation accident in the future destroys Mo XuanYu’s frail body and sends Wei WuXian’s soul back into the past, in his six-year-old body. This time, armed with the knowledge of his future self and his love for his beloved Lan WangJi, he decides to rewrite his destiny and protect those he loves. Will the YiLing Patriarch have a happier life this time?

My comments: Okay. I sat down and read this over 2 days (I had to finally go to sleep at 2am) basically without a break. It’s a fast read, and can I just say how impressed I am with how deftly Author handled so many characters all in the same scenes? (That’s not an easy trick to carry off.)

Essentially, Wei WuXian gets an opportunity to start over, his consciousness transferred to his 6-year-old body… in the middle of the dog attack, of course. And this time around, Wei WuXian is going to change EVERYTHING HE CAN to ensure that everyone is happy and healthy. Also, he wants to see his Lan Zhan as soon as possible, so fakes a soulmark (he’s heard people telling stories about that) which somehow becomes real, because of course it does. So we follow these little kids for the next 14 years (they stay very young for the whole first story, and in the middle one they’re tweens). Madame Yu watches with interest as their little stray slowly but surely pulls members of all the Big Four clans around him, weaving them into each other’s lives with his bright smiles and fierce loyalty.

Both kids have the power of their adult selves, so work some pretty amazing feats, and the adults of the Four Clans gather round to staunchly defend and train them.

Basically, it’s a time-travel, everyone-lives-no-one-dies fix-it, and it was simply a pleasure to read. (There’s still plenty of angst, and drama, and hurt/comfort and danger… so don’t think it’s all fluff and domesticity.) In addition to picking up everyone they did last time, or SHOULD have last time, they also acquire some babies. Well, eggs, which hatch into their beloved children. A dragon, tortoise+snake, phoenix and tiger. By the time the second story is finished, I think they’ve got 7 kids and are still no older than 15, heh. Wei WuXian is an over-the-top drama-mama (they all call him Mama), but if anyone he loves is hurt or threatened, he turns into a frighteningly powerful and dark force to be reckoned with.

The arc with Wen RuoHan is interesting: he begins as a frightening, creepy/inappropriate, soulless dark character and slowly grows and learns a few things and his obsession with Wei Wuxian over the years seems to teach him a few things.

The bulk of the story is the first three installments: the others are short timestamps. Don’t worry about MCD tags (it’s like reincarnation). Underage is adult minds in ten year old bodies chastely kissing, basically (if you’re the type to pass on a story for that reason).

And They Lived Happily Ever After…

Summary: Set after episode 50. Jingyi, Jin Ling and Sizhui return to the Burial Mounds to help Sizhui retrieve more memories. When exploring the cave they come upon some mysterious wards and Sizhui gets them into trouble.

My comments: Cute story, all three boys are very sweet and trying hard. wwx is not in good shape, and they just want to feed him and play with young a-yuan. (later, they get to see infant jin ling, too)

Waiting

Summary: This story starts with Wei Ying falling to his death from that cliff at Nevernight. Of course he doesn’t die, or does he? When he finds himself at the jingshi where Wangji is kneeling in the snow, waiting for his mama to come back, Wei Ying wonders what he is nowadays; spirit, ghost, or human?

My comments: In which Wei Wuxian plunges off the cliff and wakes up near Baby Wangji who is kneeling in the snow waiting for his dead Mama. He assigns himself the mission of helping these two grieving boys and making their lives better… he doesn’t know how long he has, because he doesn’t know if he’s human or a spirit or what. The boys can see and touch him, but no one else. (Except for their father….)

Love this story! More of a parallel universe thing than a time-travel fix-it.

Grave of a Living God

He lived and died and lived again.

He loved, more than his heart could hold and beyond the scope of his skin.

He died.

Then he lived again.

Otherwise known as: Wei Ying travels into the past and lands in the private garden of Wen Ruohan. It doesn’t go well.

My comments: Oh, fuck me. This was intense.

I’m kinda crying to hard to make notes. Beautiful, happy ending, though. And the whole thing is poetry. But, oh. My baby.

Looking at You Always, All Ways

Summary: Lan Wangji thought it was just a dream but the pain of being pierced in the chest by his own sword, by his own self whose appearance was taller and older was too real. The ground under his feet disappeared and he fell, and fell, and continued falling until a voice he thought he would never hear again broke his fall and suddenly, he was no longer falling. It was the voice he had so dearly missed.

Wei Ying’s voice.

—-A Time Travel Fix-It where Lan Wangji goes back in time to his first fateful encounter with Wei Wuxian for a chance to rewrite history.

My comments: Good story, where Lan WangJi is sent back in time by his older self (who has to spend the rest of eternity in some timeless frozen place, as payment, which is sad) and this time, he DOES look at Wei Wuxian, and pays attention to him, and eventually courts him, because he won’t make the same mistake twice. Very sweet.

Primary story ends with ch. 5 (6 has outtakes), so don’t worry about the 6/7.

Series comprises unrelated stories.

❤️ Wangxian’s Time-Travelling Shenanigans

Summary: “Wei Wuxian ignored Jiang Cheng’s hysterical yell, the whispers that had suddenly broke out around them, the scandalised looks of the Gusu Lan disciples — or the way Lan Qiren’s face paled in a mixture of shock and horror — and pulled back, peering into Lan Wangji’s face. His face which, Wei Wuxian suddenly realised with mounting dread, was a lot younger than he remembered it being.”

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji end up in their younger bodies mid-way through the events at Guanyin Temple. Wei Wuxian isn’t about to let a little issue like that — or the numerous other people surrounding them — stop him from confessing his love.

My comments: Have read first 3 works. It’s pretty light and delightful. Jiang Cheng’s hysterics are truly hilarious (and perfectly understandable, too!)

Aaahh, Part 3 includes the hands-down best reason for the Lan Dad to exit seclusion I’ve ever come across. [Qingheng-Jun sighed, closing his eyes. “They’re like animals,” he muttered. “They never stop. I — is this how it’s like, nowadays? Is this what younger people do? Brother, I am honestly at a loss.”]

Excerpt: “Oh my God, shut the fuck up!” [Jiang Cheng]

Wei Wuxian — who had by now wormed his way into Lan Wangji’s arms — glanced at Jiang Cheng, who was bright red by this point.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Stop being so shameless!” Jiang Cheng snapped. “Look who else is in the room!”

(He said this to two people who had originally very happily confessed in front of a horrified teenaged nephew, a man who was trying to kill them, and a poor, world-weary big brother who just wanted them to shut up. This time around, they shared their feelings in front of a room full of disciples, and the two family members who hadn’t been traumatised by the original confession.

No, these two really didn’t care who else was in the room).

Shattered Dreams

Summary: Wei Wuxian knew this scene all too well, and he knew what would come next — the flash of a blade, Jiang Yanli’s blood staining the Earth, her body dropping to the floor. He thought, ‘Lan Zhan, I’m sorry,’ and he held her in place as she reached forward to push him out of the way.

This time, Shijie wouldn’t die.

My comments: Satisfying fluff.

3,000 Years To Get Back Home

His husband was here. Wherever here was.

My comments: Oh, perfect start of a time travel fix-it. They’re so cute.

Summary: In which Wei Wuxian, shortly after being called into Mo Xuanyu’s body, is further forced into the past, where he proceeds to tumble his way into absolutely nailing a time travel fix-it.

My comments: This was… utterly engrossing, I LOVED it, I’m so immersed in the world Author is building and the robust personalities that populate it. It’s tragically unfinished, but please don’t let that stop you, because it’s an entire world. Wei Wuxian, once he’s back in time and using his adult skills in his 9yo body, now with the support of his family, is such a bright light, and it's recognized, and he can use and develop his skills at inventions and his unique understanding of cultivation, golden cores and dark energies to help all the people he loves. Simply gorgeous. (Love the whole storyline with Meng Yao, too. And Jiang Yanli finally getting a way to develop her own core into something powerful.)

Chapter 2 ends just as Wei Wuxian first meets Lan Wangji in Cloud Recesses, so I’m really excited to see where that goes this time around. And Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan remembers, although it’s more like a feeling, or a dream. But there’s a reason he dreams of Inquiry every night, and a reason that dream stopped the moment he met this new guest disciple….

❤️ Just a Tiny Mistake

Summary: Wei WuXian makes a mistake and wakes up to find himself in the past. Sure, he has a headache, but Lan WangJi is still there and everybody he loves is still alive (or will still be born). This is absolutely fine.

My comments: I love this story so much! Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi come back in time (or to an alternate reality) to when they’re 15/16, and just SHINE because they’re so experienced and knowledgeable. It turns out that wwx is a complete badass (well, we knew that) and a genius and also has been a Healer so he gets to help there. And this time around the people at Cloud Recesses (the adults and young children, anyway) admire and respect him (even though he can’t see it because he was despised for so much of his previous life)… so it’s nice to see Lan QiRen being gentle and amazed.

Lan Zhan and he plan their marriage pretty much immediately, and it doesn’t take long to convince everyone that it’s real. Wei WuXian starts to learn that in this reality he has gifts he didn’t know about, and begins to learn about Holy Cultivation (which can heal people!) combined with Demonic Cultivation. Author weaves the storyline into the new reality well: it always stays interesting.

Only 11/? chapters at this point, but hopefully there will be more. It’s a delightful world.

No, Lan Wangji, You Cannot Marry Someone You Just Met!

Summary: Wei Wuxian was tinkering with a new talisman just before he went to bed with his husband. When he opened his eyes, he finds himself a few decades younger, standing on the roof of Cloud Recesses with a jar of Emporor’s Smile in his hand. He turns to his right and sees an equally confused, equally young Lan Wangji halfway into drawing out his sword.

Or, WWX and LWJ accidentally travel back in time, attempt to save everyone, and try to convince the Lan Clan elders to let them marry early. The last one goes about as well as they thought it would.

My comments: In which Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji go back in time to start over as students in Gusu. Of course, they’ve been happily married for ten years at that point, so it’s HARD TO BE SUBTLE about it. (They’re not.) They have time, in this timeline, to come up with ideas to stop the Wens and other disasters. And Wei Wuxian’s on his best behavior, desperately wanting Lan QiRen and the elders to like him, this time around. (He happily makes talismans and other inventions to show off.)

Author’s Extra Scenes in the end notes are always funny.

Summary: Jiang Cheng glances down at Wei Wuxian’s notes, which have tiny doodles of Lan Wangji and many variations of Lan Wuxian drawn into the margins. “Holy shit,” he gasps, unable to contain his glee.

wei wuxian falls at 15.

My comments: SO. FUCKING. ADORABLE. Wei Ying is so shameless, he just shouts his love for Lan Zhan from the rooftops. (Of course, for some bizarre reason, that totally works for Lan Zhan, much to Lan XiChen’s delight and Jiang Cheng’s utter mystification. (Also, he’s very funny and I’ve been laughing out loud.)

Has an incredibly delicious moment of feeding each other peaches. (In public!) And also a lovely, lovely kiss in the cold pond (cold spring?) that Jiang Cheng interrupts, much to his mental scarring.

But lo, plot happens, and Wei WuXian appears to be recalling flashes from the future, and maybe things are going to get a little heavier….

Time-travel (or Groundhog day) fix-it. (This is the one where wwx has random flashbacks and reveals to his siblings that this is his 13th go at fixing the past.) Stops at Ch. 8.

Excerpt:

One of the Lans clear their throat. “What are your intentions with Lan Wangji!” They demand, more of an accusation than a question. “You can’t have kids, you’re a man! And you marry him for status, or anything remotely akin to that, Lan Qiren will end you before you can!”

Wei Wuxian doesn’t have to think about it. “I want to wife him so hard,” he says, causing everyone in the room to stare at him blankly.

“I want to hold his hand.” He continues.

The Lans’ faces twist weirdly. “If you-”

“I want to kiss him, and hug him, and show him around Lotus Pier, and teach him how to catch fish back home, and do musical duets with him, and cook him spicy foods. I want to see him in the morning when we wake up, I want him to smile at me, I want to tease and bully him until he goes near purple with embarrassment, I want him to do whatever he wants with me. I fancy him, I like him, I whatever him, I just want him to look my way, and if I have to call him things like sweetheart and hubby for him to do so then I will absolutely do it.”

The room is so silent, Wei Wuxian nearly goes deaf with it. He suddenly feels more mortified than he ever thought possible, and that’s even with his shamelessness! The rain does nothing to hide the loud thumping of his heart. He touches his face and realizes that it was hot enough to cook eggs on.

Jin Zixuan breaks the silence with the sharpest, most put-out sound he’s ever heard. “What, you’re no fun,” he says, picking himself up from the floor and seeing himself out.

Wei Wuxian thinks he hears him his something like ‘what is wrong with the Jiangs and how they act when they’re infatuated?’ -Or something like that.

My comments: Wow, this is really good. I hope Author comes back to it; I’d love to see what happens after 4/?

Molten Gold

Summary: Twenty years after Wei Ying’s death, Lan WangJi has lost all hope of ever seeing him again.

Under pressure from the elders of his clan to marry a female cultivator he barely knows, he flees to the Burial Mounds where he finds a long lost goddess of demonic cultivation. Surprisingly benevolent, she offers him a chance to reunite with Wei Ying, but it will cost him his golden core…among other things.

When Lan WangJi concedes and is thrown into the past, he finds life more complicated than ever. After all, how can he protect Wei Wuxian when he is powerless himself?

My comments: In which the goddess of demonic cultivation hears Lan Wangji’s plea (he’s running away from an arranged marriage after mourning for 20 years) and sends him back to his own birth, but minus his golden core. He remembers his previous life by the time he’s about 2, and immediately is disgusted by the way his mother is treated. By around 6, they realize he has no golden core and he bargains that he’ll leave the sect (so that no one knows their shame) but only if his mother gets to go with.

They meet up with a young Wei Ying, and Lan Zhan makes his parents promise that they’ll never leave him alone when they night hunt, which changes that trajectory as well.

It’s several more years down the road now, and hopefully the story hasn’t been abandoned at 5/? chapters.

Take my heart

My comments: I want to read the third chapter of this work SO BADLY. It’s delicious. Lan Zhan is clearly his older self; story is Wei Ying’s POV, and he’s confused, but also delighted.

Summary: Waking up in Gusu isn’t a surprise but waking up as a teenager is enough to make Wei Wuxian scream, disrupting the precious silence of the Cloud Recesses.

Wei Wuxian had been given a second chance when he was brought back to life. But this time, he can truly fix everything, and if he can’t find a way back then at least he can make some things right that he could never atone enough for.

My comments: This will be good. It’s only 2 chapters so far, and poignant, b/c while wwx traveled back, lwj did not, and wwx misses his old lwj terribly, and is trying to figure out how to get back.

Wish Me Luck

Summary: No one knew WHY Wei Wuxian started acting strangely, but they knew the exact moment WHEN the change happened. His smiles changed into scowls and the brightness in his eyes changes to bruises under them instead. No one knew why, and it was killing them that Wei Wuxian kept pushing them away.

Wei Wuxian was wasting away in front of their eyes, and there was nothing they could do to save him.

AKA Wei Wuxian is sent back to their classes in Cloud Recesses and isn’t able to keep up his cheery persona. He plans to save everyone at the same time, causing everyone around him to worry.
