I love Luo Yunxi so much! 馃槶 Bless this man, almost every role he plays has been a gift.
Ashes of Love (China, 2018) - A Dramavixen Review
Tumblr media
China and its fantasy dramas. It鈥檚 a tough battle, finding one that I thoroughly enjoy without relying on either a) nostalgia or b) brainwashing myself into thinking it鈥檚 a good show so that I can power through all 1,088 episodes that the writers conjure up. Ashes of Love聽is not without its flaws, but is nonetheless impressive.
[[All ratings are on a scale of 9.]]
Breakdown Summary:
It鈥檚 Story Time (plot; weight of 40%) = 7/9
Who Even Are You? (characters; weight of 40%) = 8.7/9
Technically Speaking (production; weight of 20%) = 8/9
Extra; Read All About It (extraneous; extra-credit weight of 10% when applicable) = 2/9
Charmed Vixen Total: 7(.4)+8.7(.4)+8(.2)+2(.1) = 8.1/9 (90%)
Lengthy review coming up. Screencaps incorporated. And what fun would it be without tons of spoilers, too?

Waiting to see Rong Qi and Rong Le's real relationship is one of the main reasons why I stuck with this drama and why I was intrigued in the first episode since it was evident they were not siblings.
Rong Qi wasn't in the drama as much as I would have liked, given my huge crush on Leo Luo, but I gotta say, the brief time he did have on screen really packed a punch. Rong Qi is a precious cinnamon roll who was too good for the life he was born into. I know he's a fictional character but I can't help but wish that he found peace in his afterlife after all the suffering he had during the course of this drama.

comic book trend that honestly irks the fuck out of me is when an existing character comes out as gay and they invent a new character to be their partner. like theres nothing wrong with it per se its just that the new boyfriend/girlfriend character is always jarringly bland and uninteresting, especially when compared to the latent homosexual potential that definitely already existed in the story. like there鈥檚 something so deeply unsatisfying about introducing a new side character as a girlfriend for karma in new mutants 2019 when she鈥檇 been having dramatic hand-holding adventures with dani the whole time. it implies such a definite hesitancy to ever make characters gay For Each Other, and the result of that hesitancy is that you don鈥檛 get any of the long-term slow-burn relationships that heterosexual characters get (like between batman and catwoman or whatever). instead you get New Relatable Millennial Queer Partner that you have to fight tooth and nail to give a fuck about. nobody鈥檚 doing it like rictor and shatterstar anymore nobody鈥檚 doing coming out reveals that hit like that

Holding up snarky signs doesn't seem to be working.
For me, it isn't about whether this action is appropriate or not. It's about how this kind of action is inevitable.
I'm going to let Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. explain in a quote no one seems to post during his annual holiday.
"It is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear?"
If you only speak up about a supercharger catching fire and ignore the unheard, you are prioritizing a thing over people.

The word you're looking for is kahanism if you want to criticize fascism and ethno nationalism.
I'm so tired of the 'zionism is the problem' / 'Israel still shouldn't exist tho' rhetoric and xenophobic comments about Israelis from people who think they're being allies 'calling out' more over anti-Semitism, like you still aren't listening to the Jewish community.
80-90% of Jews are zionist.
You're so caught up in The Popular Narrative and towing the party line that you refuse to learn what Zionism really is to most Jews AND refuse to accept that both Palestine and Israel have a right to exist alongside each other and that both peoples are indigenous.

hey goyim you don't know what zionism is stop saying it
zionism is not:
-murder all Palestinians!
-conquer Gaza!
-Jewish fascism
zionism is:
-an umbrella term for a vague but inherently Jewish ideology
-intrinsic to Judaism
-a belief in the Jewish homeland in historic Judea and Samaria, now known as Israel
-a yearning to live safe and free in that homeland
Jews are naturally argumentative with each other. we debate and disagree constantly and love each other for it. there are almost as many interpretations of, and approaches to zionism as there are Jews. for most of us zionism is peacefully living alongside the Palestinian people in our shared homeland. for most of us it's just Jewish safety, freedom, and self-determination in our indigenous lands. for most of us it's just living in a place where we won't be killed just for being Jewish.
for an extreme minority of Jews (such as Benjamin Netanyahu), it's twisted into some kind of violent pseudo-fascism.
But overall, zionism is a Jewish term for a Jewish concept and when Jews tell you you're using it wrong the right thing to do is to fucking stop and correct yourself.
I'm an anarchist, I believe in freedom and self-determination for all peoples and hope for a world in which we don't need the apparatus of the state to ensure that for anyone. I also believe in Jewish freedom, safety, and self-determination in our ancestral lands alongside the Palestinians who also call the land home.
my personal philosophy is best described as anarcho-zionism (with communist/primitivist leanings but we don't need to get into that now).
but yeah. you don't get to tell Jews what our words mean so fucking stop. and if you're frothing at the mouth to misbehave at me right now because of this post then you're only proving my point.
rant over I guess.
am Yisrael chai.

The thing I鈥檓 learning is that the more you love, the more it can hurt you, but the more you love, the more it鈥檚 worth it. So you can either be safe forever, or turn yourself into the kind of person who鈥檇 rather not be.
Which is sort of unfair when you think about it

I was curious and did some googling.
This is Berta and Roger Mills. They had to go to court to get a marriage license and, because of federal laws, they were eventually able to do so. They were threatened and assaulted multiple times, and eventually moved to Atlanta, where Roger worked at the US Department of Education, in the office that enforced the integration of the county's schools.
Mississippi's racist anti-miscegenation laws were not enforced after 1970, but they remained part of the state's constitution until 1988, when they were voted out.
Roger is a civil rights lawyer and so is one of his daughters. She helped fight for partner benefits after marrying her wife in New York in 2013, and also worked to get nationwide marriage equality.
History is closer to us than it sometimes seems. Humans have always been humans.
I tried to find more information on Berta Mills, but, understandably considering the scrutiny they received, she seems to be a private person. The Mills divorced after 18 years, the same year the anti-miscegenation laws were voted off Mississippi's constitution.
I did find this information in an image of a newspaper article by the Desert Sun, Jan 2, 1988.
They had three children, according to the article.
Apparently someone threatened that their children would have spots? Old timey racism, I guess.
Berta was "elated, proud for Mississippi鈥攁nd surprised" when Mississippi amended it's constitution.
It was amended by a narrow margin of 52% to 48%.
They met working at the same law firm. At first I thought Berta was a lawyer, too, but then I remembered the time period.
Roger was beaten by a group of white men for taking Berta to the State Fair in '69. I'm guessing Berta faced similar threatening situations.
There's a racist 1988 quote from Elmore Greaves, lawyer and co-founder of the Southern National Party, "this is a white country, was founded by white people, and was meant to stay that way."
Berta has an elder daughter, Princess, from a previous marriage.
Roger and Berta's daughters are Demetria, Valencia, and Artemis.

do you know where "no beta we die like x" comes from and how it is used?
The term "beta" in this context is short for "beta reader" - a person who reads a fic while it's still in the editing stage and helps the writer get it ready to post. Some betas check grammar. Some check canon compliance. Some are sensitivity readers. There are lots of things that betas can do.
So functionally, saying "no beta" means that the writer didn't get this checked by a second person before they posted it. It's a warning that there might be errors or typos etc. It's mostly used when an author has written something quickly and is posting without doing a lot of (or any) edits first.
As for where it comes from? It all started with a bumper sticker.
Tumblr media
This image was an internet meme at one point, and it got meme'd on in the form of "no ___ we ___ like men"
Here on tumblr, one of the versions that got really popular was from now-deleted user @grec1a who created this version:
Tumblr media
From there, it migrated to AO3 as the "no beta we die like men" tag, and very often the word men is replaced by the name of a character who dies in canon.
