      ‘ You must be Geralt’s girl. ’ The woman leans back on her horse, smile as easy as it is hard. ‘ Don’t look surprised, with the way he talked about you anyone from Vergen would know who you are. That’s the bad news. The good news is I don’t want anything from you, you’re just another girl to me, but one who’s guardian I happen to owe several favors.’

The smile eases at that, as she dismounts in one swift moment, her armor groaning in protest though, it barely seems to weight her down. ‘ You may call me Saskia, and you’re a long way for anywhere you should want to be. ’

    “ Well, Zoltan, here we are - ” A gauntlet covered hand sweeps over the whole of Vergen from their perch upon the wall, the breeze blowing at her back full of the smells of the valley. “ The place where we make our stand, for a future for all of us. ” Saskia smiles, the warmth of sunshine on her back and the sound of people below filling her with a sense of joy she does not know how to convey, and can only let a heavy hand rest on Zoltan’s shoulder. “ So, friend, what do you think? ”

    Saskia laughs, a boisterous sound that shakes her armor as she looks with fondness to the girl of prophecy, as none could deny her place any longer. But perhaps that is what made Saskia so fond of her, they were both women of strange and prophetic beginnings. “ Seems as well a start to this journey as any, Ciri, but I hope we are planning on more than one ?”

“ It will be the last for awhile. Given the circumstances I don’t think any of us can afford to go bumbling about taverns for want of spirits. ” Another chuckle leaves her lips, but it is softer by degrees as her hand raises to call over the inn keeper. “ And a meal, we should make the most of food we have not caught and cooked ourselves while we have the chance.”

    “ I think you mean the more smoke to be seen by. “ The woman pushes off the wall looking over the Pontar valley, her eyes glinting in the fading sunlight as she stress over the valley below that gave Vergen it’s defensible position.  “ No matter how well a fire burns it is more chaotic than anything, we cannot afford to invite chaos into Vergen or Henselt will take advantage of it.”

“ No, we need a light without smoke, a fire that can be controlled and set loose upon our enemies. I’m afraid that is something wood alone will not be able to provide. ”

    “ Here, I brought you something. ” The woman leans down beside the wounded commandow, concern crossing her brow as she sees the jagged cut swathe of his wounds. He will be forever marked by this, but something in the hard gaze of his remaining eye tells her he knows that already. “ It’s not much, but it should dull the pain, and I’ll have some food brought to you as well. ”

“ I did as you asked and tried to find others, but I’m afraid there were none to be found. They have either escaped, were recaptured, or are dead. There are signs of a scuffle in the valley below, but nothing more. ” Her hand raises, perhaps thinking to check beneath the bandage she ripped from her clothes, but thinks better of it, instead pushing off her knees to stand. “ We’ll head there as soon as you are strong enough, perhaps you shall find your men where I could not. ”
