A couple of thoughts on how Chuck’s curse works. This wasn’t merely giving Sam and Dean regular people level luck/bad luck. Because most regular people have a mix of both, good days, bad days. There are days where it feels like every little thing that can go wrong will, but mostly stuff works smoothly. Or bad stuff happens but good things will also happen.

But Chuck, being a vindictive bastard, didn’t just take away the god-given luck he had offered to his favorite two, it wasn’t just them with that blessing removed. He did curse them. The exaggerated humor of the ep is tacitly showing he replaced it with an extreme form of bad luck. Sam and Dean still aren’t regular people, they are now cursed people. This was not ordinary everyday bad luck.

There’s a line that might seem like a dark humor throaway, “we might accidentally kill each other,” but it isn’t. The other AU’s, the other Sam and Deans, one kills the other. The dark ending Chuck wants for this Sam, this Dean, a grave marker that says Winchester. Chuck’s avaricious enjoyment at Team Free Will’s conflict and drama, that he fostered along—yes it was them, their choices, their feelings, but Chuck jiggers environment, places objects in people’s paths. This is what Chuck wants. He tried epic plots to get Sam v Dean there and failed. Now he’s going for the mundanity of really really awful terrible bad luck, it’s an extreme form of the day to day stuff people have to deal with. Maybe instead of epic plot MoC Dean, Samifer, demon blood Sam, they’ll accidentally shoot each other while cleaning their guns, Chuck will get the bleak end he craves.

That ringmaster marketing line: “the two of you against the world.”

Sam and Dean’s innate courage and refusal to give up no matter the odds—the ep showcased that and I loved it. But there’s also the fact that had they gone through with the cage fight they likely would have been killed. Butch & Sundance, going down swinging against the odds, together. Which canon isn’t presenting as a desirable ending. Last week’s was Butch & Sundance vampires...going down swinging, together.

Sam and Dean’s core determination and courage, that is all them and presented as a good thing, but then going out Butch & Sundance, dying, together, isn’t.

Look what happens yet again, Chuck’s wants are subverted. Because Sam and Dean aren’t alone, they have a werewolf friend. Being a werewolf isn’t exactly mundane and yet Garth represents the everyperson, he is regular, he is “ordinary” in a very positive sense, living his life, with a loving family, despite being a werewolf with superpowers. Garth gets to play the hero and uses his superpowers to save his friends and still somehow this doesn’t upset the feeling of Garth being not Other but as the regular people while Sam and Dean are still the Other.

There’s a whole lot to notice and talk about here.

as we tiptoe around each other in a slow dance

and step towards the portal.

here’s an idea for y’all since twitter has already become a cesspool of typical American sociopathy:

if you’re an American, what’s happening with Iran is not about you. if this does devolve into war, you will not be affected. you do not need to make cringey ww3 memes ~to cope~. there is little-to-no chance that you will get drafted. there has never been a boots-on-the-ground invasion of the United States. what WILL likely happen is that America will invade yet another middle eastern country, and innocent civilians of that country - in this case Iranians - will get killed. America has always been the aggressor that interfered in Iran’s internal politics, not the other way around.

stop wondering why so many people from other countries hate America when the answer is right in front of you.
