It’s been almost 4 years since I moved up to Portland and @staticmedium moved out of their old location where this @kilianeng piece was printed. The gang at Static and I did some really fun collaborations together back then, and this was one that I was particularly fond of. Kilian is one of the artists whose work I watched evolve as he went back and forth between movie poster related pieces and fine art pieces. So, naturally I was pretty excited to print this one. With his print work being as popular as it is, I always considered this one to be a bit of a hidden gem that some of his fans may not know about. It’s been a while (years?) since I’ve done one of these process videos, but I decided to make one for this Dazed and Confused inspired print by @jeffboyes that was released by @galleries1988 and subsequently sold out in the blink of an eye this past weekend. This one was a variant on the original color scheme, done in era-appropriate earthy browns and oranges, in an edition of 76 for the year that the movie takes place. I’m so happy for the success of Jeff’s show and to know that people still have a desire to buy and appreciate art amidst all of the madness in our world right now. Those of you buying art may not realize it, but you are helping not only keep art alive, but also supporting the artists that make it, the printers that print it, and the galleries that show and sell it. As a printer with a home studio and no employees to support, my heart goes out to all of my printer friends who are not able to do their thing right now because of government restrictions and/or distancing measures that make it impossible to conduct safe practices. I am beyond fortunate to take work like this right now, as slow as it may be coming in due to the fearful business climate we live in. Cleanin’ off dem mixing sticks. Anyone else use wooden ones? I took this photo because it occurred to me that I have maybe 20-30 of these in my shop, and some of them might be about 10 years old (it’s been years since I’ve used Ulano emulsion). I have sometimes considered buying those fancy stainless steel paddle ones, but these have always done the job. They’re not too hard to keep clean, and if they ever break, I just recruit one from my last pot of emulsion or grab some free ones the next time I’m at The Big Orange Store. Tell me what you use! Life imitating abstract art? Old test prints or finished prints with defects are eventually cut into strips and securely thrown away.
