“Maybe.”

His response was flat, and seemed to be punctuated by a cool breeze. He took one deep breath, and then another- he was trying to get a grip over himself. He really, really didn’t want to be doing this, but... he also didn’t just want to leave Fetch hanging like that, you know? But the silence felt like it was coming down in a wall between her and him.

He worked up the ability to look over at her. “Either case, I’m sorry about that. If there’s something I can do to make you feel better, well... I’m all ears.”

“A long time ago, in a little town called Tokyo, Japan, I actually had hero personas. I think you can still find the POW cards for them, even...”

He looked around idly, and on a nearby table, the POW cards he had mentioned were face-up. “Speak of the devil,” Cobol mused as he picked them up.

The first one was a picture of a very young girl- six? maybe seven?- in an elaborate white-and-robin’s egg kimono, with ice-skates and a cat-ear headband. “Yuki-Neko Musume. I had it in my mind that I’d help with mountain rescues, I suppose? When the hero organization of Japan, Momotaro’s Children, caught wind that I had an eye for coding, though, I got a bit of a wardrobe change.”

The other card had a picture of a teenage girl in stylized seifuku, al la standard magical girl. She still had the cat ears, though. “Techno-Neko. Some of the most uncomfortable years of my life. Momotaro’s Children wanted to market me as a cute, sassy girl, but I had started realizing that I... wasn’t that.”

The satyr was slow to answer. “I love the people here, but my spirit has been flowing away... well, more like trickling away really, ever since we set up here.” He sounded almost quieter than usual. “I’m pretty certain it’s because the Academy is so close.”

As he said this, his face was level. Not scared, not upset, and his voice was slightly deeper and quicker in flow. Was... was the charismatic, frat-dude attitude he normally projected a front? “I’m glad for the people that I have around me, because it’s definitely slowing things down, but... I don’t know for how long.”

“Wake up! Wake up! It’s just a dream!” “What were you dreaming about…? You were shouting…” “I woke up because you were screaming so loudly.” “Shh– No, no, don’t panic, love. You’re safe now.” “It was so real! I swear! He/she was here!” “I don’t ever want to sleep again. What if– what if I dream about that again?” “If you tell me, it’ll go away. That’s what my mum/dad always told me and it’s never failed me.” “Do you want to go back to sleep, or shall I make you a cup of tea?” “I don’t want to go back to sleep…” “I’m so scared… I can’t stop seeing what I just saw. It was so vivid!” “There’s really nobody here, okay? Do you need me to show you around to prove that to you?” “How do I know I’m not still dreaming? You’re acting really strangely.” “Let’s get you to the shower, you’re covered in sweat.” “There’s really nobody else here.” “You’ve got a really bad fever. I need coffee– no, I need a drink, a stiff one.” “How long have you been having these nightmares?” “I’ve had nightmares all my life, but they’ve been really bad recently.” “You get so worked up before you go to sleep, maybe you should try to relax a bit more. Maybe then you’ll get some rest?” “I’d kill for a peaceful night’s sleep.” “A dream catcher? Honestly? I’m not a child.” “Nothing’s ever helped this. I just need to learn to live with the fact that sleeping will always be a nightmare, literally.” “I’m so tired… but there’s no way I’m going back to sleep after that.”

Pan deflated onto the bench with a long exhale. “Hoo-kay. Everything. Got it.” A hand went to the end of one of his ram-curled horns, picking at the rounded-down tip in a fashion that invoked both playing with one’s hair and picking at one’s nails. It took him a while to start up.

“So, the same genetics, magic... whatever that made me a satyr is inherited, right? My old GP called it the ‘Fae Free-Radical’, but the important take-away is that people with that genetic- my family- can manifest the ability to manipulate their spirits. Souls. Whatever you wanna call them.” Pan had yet to make eye contact with Fetch. “Most of us only have variants where they use their own spirits. My little brother, for example, can create spiritual holes in tools and weapons that can be filled with the will of their owners, so long as he made the thing in question. My older brother.. could focus his spiritual energy into physical attacks, as long as he felt he was logically and truthfully doing the right thing.”

Pan looked at Fetch, the luster in his normally warm eyes dulled. “Like any good villainous origin story, I was slightly different. My power revolves around the innate and empathetic control of spirits. Basically, just like... spiritual cheer-leading. That’s what my folks, P.O.I.N.T., and basically the entire hero community wanted it to be. Wasn’t ever quite that simple, though...”

The hand at his horn fell to the seat-edge of the bench, which it gripped at. “When my soul feels like it, I can do all sorts of things to another person’s will. I could probably make them so gung-hoe that it’d be foolhardy, or I can make them just not want to do something so badly that they stop doing it all together, for a short time. I can amp up and tone down emotions. I’ve never done anything, ever, with memories, but I have made...” Pan stopped and took a very deep breath.

“The reason why POW considered me a villain in the first place is that I made my older brother’s spirit so adverse to keeping me from leaving the school we were at, that it couldn’t use its power. I made that part of him so reluctant that I think it just... left him.”

For a villain, Pan’s voice seemed too tight for him to be comfortable about that reality. “Your spirit and willpower running away from you is... never, ever, ever a fun time, and Aubrey must have been so hur- distracted by it that he didn’t even think to stop me.”

Pan gave a concerned look, fighting back the urge to give her a concerned smile. Cobol had told him about how she had gushed over her job back at the cafe. That kind of enthusiasm was very hard to just fake. If the possible issue with her current relationship was based off of her previous experience of having to hide important parts of who she was, then she should be fine. There was nothing that she had to hide.

But, now was not the moment for those words. Fetch had asked him abut his powers, probably to help herself not focus on this upsetting even. Make it less about her. He could relate.

“Ah, do you want the full blown story, or do you just want the briefing?” He knew that sounded dodgy, so he quickly added “Either way is fine! I just recommend we find a seat if you want...all the gossip, so to say.”

Pan hesitated as he tried to decide how to answer her question. No, honestly, he had no memory-reading abilities. This had never, ever happened before. But if he told her that he saw that memory, too, she may doubt that.

He decided that honesty was, in fact, the best policy. “Unless some random new power just now sprung up, then no. I can’t read memories- shouldn’t be able to. I don’t quite know what happened there. But I did see something.” His gut writhed as he rubbed his elbow, ready to tense up should Fetch become aggressively upset. “An argument?”

Does anyone else get that feeling of restless lethargy? Like you desperately want to be somewhere else, doing something else- that feels like it actually needs doing-, but your mind won’t tell you what to actually do, and your body just doesn’t let you do any random thing? Like you’re waiting, and you feel guilty for it, but you don’t even know what your waiting for?

Sorry for the purple prose, but I’ve been dealing with this for the past few days. So far, the best fix I’ve found is a structured, mandatory tea-time on a daily basis. It takes away that guilty waiting feeling, if only temporarily.

This is one of the instrumentals that I listen to during those tea-times. It’s very long as to minimize how much time I spend looking for the next song to listen to. ~Cobol.
