Increase light intensity by 5 times? American researchers develop nanowire UV LEDs
Nanowire experts at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a UV LED that uses five times the light intensity of a similarly designed LED based on a special type of housing.
UV LEDs are used in a growing number of applications such as polymer curing, water purification and medical disinfection. Micro LEDs are also the focus of visual displays. NIST staff are experimenting with nanowire-based LEDs for scanning probe tips for electronic and biological applications.
This new type of LED with higher light intensity is the result of NIST's expertise in manufacturing high quality GaN nanowires. Recently, researchers have been experimenting with nanowire cores made of silicon-doped GaN with additional electrons surrounded by a shell made of magnesium-doped GaN with additional electronically bonded Hole.
The light generated by the LED is due to the recombination of electrons and holes injected into the shell. The new LEDs add a small amount of aluminum to the shell, which reduces losses due to electron spillage and light reabsorption.
As described in the journal Nanotechnology, this new type of LED is made of nanowires with a p-i-n structure that injects electrons and holes into the nanowires. The added aluminum helps to confine electrons to the core of the nanowire, enhancing electroluminescence by a factor of five.
"The role of aluminum is to introduce current asymmetry that prevents electrons from flowing into the shell. Although this reduces efficiency, it limits electrons and holes to the core of the nanowire," said first author Matt Brubaker.
The nanowire test structure has a length of about 440 nm and a shell thickness of about 40 nm. The final LED, including the case, is almost 10 times larger. The researchers found that the amount of aluminum added to the fabricated structure depends on the nanowire diameter.
Research leader Kris Bertness said that at least two companies are developing nanowire-based Micro LEDs, and NIST has signed a collaborative R&D agreement with one of the companies to develop dopant and structural characterization methods. Researchers have already had a preliminary discussion with Scanning Probes on the use of NIST's LED technology, and NIST plans to show prototype LEDs soon.

The wavelength of ultraviolet light is between visible light and X-ray. Its wavelength range is 10 to 400 nm. However, many optoelectronic manufacturers believe that the wavelength of 430 nm is also ultraviolet. Although many ultraviolet rays are not seen by the human eye, they are still named for producing a partially violet visible spectrum, and UV LEDs have made great progress in the past few years. This is not only the result of advances in the production of solid-state UV devices, but also the increased demand for environmentally friendly UV lamps.

Good news: RayVio's UVB LED can be used to treat patients with vitamin D deficiency
PR Newswire's research published today in Scientific Reports shows that RayVio's 293nm UV LEDs produce light more efficiently in skin samples than in sunlight. Led by MD F. Holick, MD, and Boston University School of Medicine and Boston University Ignition Award, Tyler Kalajian and his team found vitamin D3 from skin samples exposed to RayVio UV LEDs for just 0.52 minutes. It is more than twice as much as the sample exposed to sunlight for 32.5 minutes.
Dr. Holick, a professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine and an endocrinologist at the Boston Medical Center, said: "We tested UV LEDs from different sources and wavelengths. RayVio's 293nm LEDs show the largest vitamins in the shortest amount of time. D3 generates potential. This research will bring a new generation of photopharmacology technology that uses LEDs with specific wavelengths to cause specific biological effects in human skin, helping to treat and prevent chronic diseases."
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, rickets and other metabolic bone diseases, which are common in the northern and southern latitudes where long-term sunshine is limited throughout the year. This vitamin D generator is suitable for patients with fat malabsorption syndrome such as inflammatory bowel disease and gastric bypass surgery. Studies have shown that RayVio's UV LEDs can be used to treat patients with vitamin D deficiency.
Ultraviolet LED devices that produce vitamin D3 can be used on areas of the skin that are less exposed to sunlight, such as the thighs, arms, abdomen, and back, thereby minimizing the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. The device also emits a narrower band of UVB (UVB), which reduces the likelihood of skin damage when exposed to higher wavelengths of UV radiation.
Dr. Robert C. Walker, CEO of RayVio, said: “The potential of digital UV technology in phototherapy is enormous. Dr. Holick's research on our UVB LEDs demonstrates the potential of new applications to improve and save hundreds of thousands of lives. In the United States, 75% of adolescents and adults lack vitamin D. Through the efforts of the research team and the groundbreaking work of the Boston University Photonics Center on UV LEDs, we may soon see innovative treatments (such as wearables). Equipment integration) can help millions of people."

Fluence collaborates with the University of the Netherlands to test a full spectrum LED plant lighting solution
Recently, Osram's Fluence released a press release saying that the Wageningen University And Research Center (WUR) cooperated with Fluence and greenhouse agriculture consultant Vortus to release preliminary results of a culture experiment. The feasibility of the Fluence full spectrum LED lighting solution.
The data shows that for some tomato varieties, Fluence's PhysioSpec Greenhouse? spectrum is used to increase tomato yield by 11% compared to high-pressure sodium lamp greenhouse lighting and is more energy efficient.
The press release showed that the study was conducted on Tomagino and Merlice tomato varieties, and Dr. Ep Heuvelink of WUR and his team compared the effects of high-pressure sodium lighting provided by Fluence's PhysicsSpec Greenhouse and a recognized supplier.
Vortus owner Barend Lobker said that many growers now use high-pressure sodium lamp technology as the only source of light for greenhouse lighting, and the WUR test proves that this is not the case. Planters are not sure if LEDs will be able to grow crops equally effectively, so they have been reluctant to switch to LED lighting. The WUR test this time eliminates any doubts about the performance of full-spectrum LEDs.
Fluis's horticultural service expert and senior photobiologist Haris Ouzounis said that this is a very exciting result for the application of full-spectrum LED technology in greenhouse tomato production. The trial demonstrates that even without any environmental optimization for LED solutions, full-spectrum LEDs can match the needs of commercial growers, even more than traditional lighting fixtures.
Fluence said that WUR will release all data later this year. (Compile: LEDinside Janice)

UV lamp new use! Safe on the transmission line to reduce bird collision 98%
EDM International, a US provider of sustainable solutions for the power industry, has developed a system that uses ultraviolet light to prevent birds from hitting power lines and reduces collisions by 98%.
According to reports, James Dwyer and his colleagues from EDM International developed an Avian Collision Avoidance System (ACAS), which is equipped with UV lamps on th power line support structure and lights up at night.
They tested the system at the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center in Nebraska, USA, where a power line passed through the Central Platte River. ), and here is the key habitat for migratory sandhill cranes. Every night, they randomly switch the collision avoidance system to observe the behavior of dune cranes flying along the river at dusk and night.
As a result, the recorded data showed that during the opening of the collision avoidance system, the collision between the dune crane and the transmission line was reduced by 98%, and the dangerous flight was reduced by 82%. At the same time, the sandhill crane reacts faster and makes more control to prevent it from hitting the power line.
Dwyer said he studied the collision of birds and transmissions across North America for several years, involving many birds and birds, and even researching wires that have been modified to reduce bird collisions according to industry standards.
Dwyer hopes that ACAS can be applied to other power lines and communication towers to determine whether the system is equally effective for other species, habitats and wire configurations. If the study proves that ACAS is widely effective, he hopes that the collision avoidance system can be easily used by the global power industry.
It is reported that the study was published in The Condor: Journal of Ornithological Applications. (Compile: LEDinside Janice)
