Aihole is a major archaeological site located along Malaprabha river valley, in Bagalakote district of Karnataka (India). It has more than 120 stone & cave temples built between 4th (early Chalukya dynasty) & 12th century CE. These temples belong to Hindu (100+), Budhist (01) & Jain (a few) religions. Aihole was a major cultural center & religious site during Chalukyas for innovations in architecture & experimentation of ideas. Meguti hillocks at Aihole is also a site for prehistoric dolmens & cave paintings. There is a rock with human footprint at Malaprabha river which is believed to be that of Parashuram, 6th avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is here that he washed his axe after killing abusive Kshatriyas who were exploiting their military powers, giving the land its red color. This temple in the picture is dedicated to Shiva & Vishnu and it is the main attraction of Aihole. It is erroneously referred to as Durga temple, because of it's proximity to a Durg (fort). Akbar's mausoleum was built between 1604–1613 at Sikandra, near Agra (Uttar Pradesh, India). The construction was completed by his son Jahangir. The tomb is made of sandstone & marble. It was subsequently repaired & restored in 1905. Akbar followed a secular life & adopted Sulh-i-kul (universal peace) which formed the essence of Dīn-i Ilāhī (Religion of God). His tomb was in sync with his philosophy. It has mixture of Hindu & Muslim design elements. It is one of the rare Muslim tomb which doesn't face Mecca (as per Muslim architecture). Dhankar lake at about 14,000 feet is a natural lake formed due to melting glacier. This lake is located in Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh. One has to trek for 1.8 km from Dhankar road to reach the lake.
