Passing Thoughts Of A Death Care Worker

In an effort to salvage my mental health until I can hopefully afford therapy, I’ve decided to bare my soul to the internet in the form of a blog. Hopefully, in some way shape or form, these ramblings will help someone out there. You’re not alone and you’re only slightly crazy.

The connections we make in life are what makes them worth living in my opinion. Connections to people, animals, nature, whatever keeps you grounded really. I know personally the people I have met have kept me grounded on earth, but my people pleasing tendencies tend to stress me out. I want to make my friends and family happy, to the point of my own detriment sometimes. However, within the last year there’s been one friend I have made that is exception to this rule.
He called me a dumbass yesterday, and quite frankly I’ve never been happier.
Somehow the mask I usually wear is invisible to this person. But anyhow, long story short I was at our weekly game night and I he called me a dumbass for a particularly poor decision I was about to make. I have always been considered the “nice mom friend” so it’s weirdly rare for people to call me out like that for the sake of my feelings. We bantered about it for a bit, but later on he told me he called a dumbass because he knew I could handle the insult.
Essentially, this person has no qualms about calling me out on my flaws, yet chooses to be friends with me anyway because of the overwhelming positive matches in our personalities. I can drop the “mom friend” face in front of him, and I usually do because there’s no reason for me to keep it up. Not to say I hate being the mom friend, but getting the be the full blown gremlin dumbass friend once in a while I really nice.
So, in short, make life worth living by finding more friends you can sometimes be a dumbass around and they still choose to keep you

In honor of Day of the Dead, here’s a repost of my comic about the San Francisco Columbarium and the man who spent 26 years restoring it.
This comic originally appeared on Medium at The Nib. Go check out my other work there.

Yesterday was our winter solstice event, where we take ice lanterns and light up a lake side in memory of those we have lost. It’s an event I treasure with all my heart.
May you too find a light in the darkest times. Here’s to more daylight going forward.
Happy holidays

People don’t talk about this kind of thing nearly enough. OP, I’m so so sorry about your friend. Your grief is valid and I wish you the best of luck as you learn to heal from your grief
Grief is a difficult thing to experience in any circumstance. Period.
But the grief of losing someone suddenly and unexpectedly, especially if they were young when they passed, rewires your brain something different

12/14. The day I lost my dad. And now, 11 years later, it’s the day I’ve become a godparent. Funny how life works sometimes.
My dad loved being around and working with kids, so I think to say this probably makes him pretty happy. It’s nice to have something to celebrate today after all this time

If you’re missing someone this holiday season, let this be a sign to do something they loved in their memory.
Making my great-aunt’s fried pies brought me peace today.
Happy holidays, y’all

Tis the season for gratitude
This time a year it can sometimes be hard for people such a first responders, health care workers, retail, death care, and so many more people who make the world continue to spin to be grateful. I know for me personally, the holidays (and the days immediately after) tend to be the busiest. And, in turn, it can be hard to have gratitude during the chaos. Watching family be together and cheerful is hard when you’re stuck at work. But as I have grown older, it’s become weirdly easy to be content with all of the little things I have. But the little things are not what I want to shine a light on today.
I am, and always will be, eternally grateful for my mom. We may not always see eye to eye. She may have some “boomer” tendencies that drive me up a wall. She wasn’t the perfect parent. But she’s a woman who is made entirely of love and compassion. I watched her pick herself up by the boot straps when the world was falling apart. And now, I’m watching her become the best grandmother to my nephew, who loves her more than anything. I’m grateful for the mom who has always made time for her adult children.
And now, with the holidays here and always the time of year us death care works seem to be busiest, I have a mother who makes sure that holiday cheer is never too far. I’m 26 years old, and she still fills my wooden advent calendar for me.
I hope that the things in your life, big or small, fill you with gratitude and joy this holiday season.

Look I have no idea if this is real, but fun embalming fact!
Bilirubin and formaldehyde make a fun little called bilivirden that makes you look well… like this. That’s why you get a special embalming fluid if you have jaundice that uses less formaldehyde than traditional embalming fluid

I hate being on call Christmas Eve 🙃
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You see, maybe it's because Christmas is a hard time for people, maybe it's because too many families get together, but statistically, Christmas Eve... it's one of the worst nights of the year to be on-call.
