Liking a character who sucks is silly because yeah I hate him and yeah I want people to bully him and say mean things but if you say the Wrong mean thing I'm going to get defensive

RWBY "Critics" and Tropes
Most of the "criticism" of RWBY ultimately amounts to tropes and expectations, not the quality of the show itself.
Now are there legitimate issues with RWBY's story? Absolutely. Pacing, cast bloat, lack of planning, dialogue...
But that's not what people talk about. They talk about the tropes they wanted to see and are mad weren't used.
Why is Adam a bad character? Because "misunderstood and misguided anti-hero who fights for a good cause and gets redeemed" is a popular trope people thought was going to be used and they got mad when it wasn't.
Why do people still argue Ironwood was right? Because "strong man making morally grey choices for the greater good" is a popular trope and people got mad that it wasn't how Ironwood was treated. Never mind that his actions only ever made things worse and that narratively, he exists to show why that kind of thinking fails, it's a trope they expected to see and got mad that it wasn't there.
Why is Ruby a "bad protagonist"? Because "wide-eyed ingenue who gets their idealism broken and has to 'grow up' into a more cynical version of themself to save the day" is a trope they like and expected to see. Never mind that one of RWBY's core themes from the beginning has been rejecting cynicism and embracing heroism, it's a trope they like and got mad that it wasn't used.
Everything the "critics" say about RWBY basically boil down to them not liking the actual theme of the show and getting mad that it wasn't an entirely different show with a completely different tone, genre, and theme that they would like better.

But you’ve also got Emerald maybe choosing to be a huntress instead of going with Salem, or joining Cinder with the intent of being a double agent.
You’ve got Robyn deciding to go into politics and make a change earlier and with the knowledge of Salem to guide her actions.
You’ve got Clover or the Aces maybe making different choices and trying to change things.
James trying to stop Arthur Watts defecting.
Maria going back to before she loses her eyes and doing things differently with the knowledge she has.
Theres sooooo many options.
RWBY has so much potential on the slinging characters back in time fanfic trope because like, yeah you can send back the main four or JNR or Oscar and it’s epic and you have a great story in that, but also so many other characters can be equally good stories that hugely change the future based on the knowledge they have and the changes they might choose to make.
Robyn and/or her happy huntresses- that’s a cool story
Clover and/or the ace ops- that’s a cool story
Ironwood do-over- could be fascinating
Qrow or Raven- again, fascinating.
Emerald deserves a do-over, and what would she do differently.
Any of these characters, or a combination of these characters, could have such a fascinating time travel fix it fic. I love it.

You get me.
Theres so many good options and stories these characters could take that would either make it better or waaaaaaay worse (but we’re going fix it lmao).

genuinely one of the worst things that’s happened to television in the last few years (exacerbated by streaming services) is death of Filler. going from 20 episodes to 8 because “we didn’t really need that episode where the main characters went to the beach right? it had no long lasting effect” but we DID!!! we needed to see how they act without the Big Bad Plot and to establish the dynamics between the characters and lay in the sun (do they forget sunscreen? how do they react to a thieving seagull? do they get buried in the sand or do they do the burying?). the plot isn’t everything. the action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments. give us character development and our little scenes back

I keep seeing the XYZ as Huntr/x (or past hunters) from Kpop Demon Hunters in the trio pose and I was trying to work out who it could be from RWBY (even if I can’t actually draw it) in that trio pose because they’re so often in teams of four and then it hit me:
Tumblr media
This is the dramatic trio pose.
Just make their weapons glow and we’ve got it.

This is a thought I've especially had when thinking about the episode the Badge and the Burden, but it applies as early as The Shining Beacon: I think people take the moments of comedic highjinks, especially from the early Volumes, way too seriously when doing character analysis.
Like, Ruby does think weapons are cool, she gets excited about seeing new ones, and when she's feeling especially awkward she does default to them as a conversation topic. But that's not any kind of obsession, at most it's special interest combined with talking shop; she's surrounded by fellow Huntsmen-in-Training, they all know weapons and fighting, it's basically a guaranteed common interest. Ruby is awkward and maybe a little unsure of her place at Beacon at this point, but she's not actually super socially incompetent nor completely obsessed with weapons to the point of the exclusion of all else.
Yang ditching Ruby wasn't actually about wanting to hang out and party with her friends — as evidenced by the fact none of the friends she mentions and sees one time in episode 2 ever appear again, and also the fact that like two hours later Yang has already ditched them and is eagerly waiting and looking out for Ruby. Yang left because of exactly what she said right beforehand: she wanted Ruby to make friends on her own.
And also, it was just about narrative convenience, getting Ruby alone so she could meet Weiss, Blake and Jaune one by one as our main protagonist. Narrative convenience is also presumably why Weiss waves around a leaky bottle of Dust like she's trying to communicate in semaphore — not because she's usually careless with her dangerous and highly volatile ammunition (Weiss was equally if not more at fault for the explosion than Ruby IMHO), but because they needed a quick, dramatic way to reiterate and showcase precisely what Dust is/does.

‘Summer was the spring maiden and her last thoughts were of Raven but Raven has a reputation to maintain and the truth hurts too much’ is a concept that has me feral ngl.

I headcanon that Qrow and Raven have very few photos of themselves before they go to Beacon, just though life in the tribe not being big on photos or scrolls or that sort of thing.
There are a few security photo screenshots and wanted posters but they don’t show those to friends particularly often unless they’re close friends.

The inherent comedy to me of everyone (correctly) referring to Summer as the girls mother, leading to people who don’t know to assume Summer is Qrow’s sister, because he’s their uncle and he frankly talks about her that way.
Only to then find out she was his huntsman partner and best friend, Yang’s bio mother is Qrow’s twin, he has no blood relation to Ruby at all and also said twin held Weiss hostage and is a bandit leader who betrayed all of them and fought them at Haven and has been wreaking havoc in Mistral for years among other things. Which would also lead into Qrow’s childhood/history and how messy STRQ ended up and so much else.
Like… imagine that lore coming out after the casual assumption of “oh the girls mum, Qrow’s sister, died years ago but inspires them all to this day” which is the logical conclusion based on how they talk about it all.

Commission for @snowqueenofmyheart! Emerald as the character she alludes to: Aladdin. This is basically a screenshot redraw from the Disney film, with a few modifications, of course.
We thought that it would be a cool touch to make Disney's Aladdin lamp look like the Relic from RWBY. SnowQueen requested the glowing blue, and I suggested coloring some parts of the lamp with gold!
Who else remembers this old fanart of mine? Turns out, I'm not the only one 😄
