Finished the Black Water Arc (I think.) I loved it. I adore He Xuan's character so much. Hatred motivated him, sure, and grief and love. He'll never be fulfilled unless he heals in death. Such good revenge.

Shi Wudu provoked He Xuan into violence and so spared Shi Qingxuan from executing his older brother. Shi Wudu had been overly protective of Shi Qingxuan all his life and, in my opinion, he was right. Shi Wudu won in the end. He even chose his death.

What a brilliant arc.

I adore how Ling Wen is written so far. A female character with just as much dimension and humanity as the other males in the story is such a low bar but I'm so grateful. She's a breath of fresh air.

I cannot be the only one who finds Shi Qingxuan annoying. Don't get me wrong, he's a great character. If I encountered his personality in real life, however, I'd dislike him. Of course, I'm only on volume 4, but does he do anything by himself? All I know is that he's mildly socially insensitive, talks a lot, likes to drink a lot and is blind to his privilege. Shi Wudu has done everything for him and gives him everything. I like Shi Wudu more. He is definitely harsh and cruel, I understand. His flaunting of wealth, while his methods are questionable, is earned. Yes, bad stuff happens to Shi Qingxuan, but I'm not actually criticising the character here. I'm just saying I wouldn't like him in person.

[FURTHER SPOILERS DOWN HERE. I usually add the tags so the post can be blacklisted but I do not talk "serious" in public tags.]

As for Shi Qingxuan's character, I know he lost his status as a Heavenly Official and I think (so far) that makes a lot of sense. He didn't ascend by himself, I read up until volume 4 that the only thing he does occasionally alone willingly is drinking, his wealth comes from his brother, his weapons also, and his entire 'mythos' is reliant on Shi Wudu as his counterpart - it is so tied together that the mortals actively changed Shi Qingxuan's image to better fit their perspective on Lord Water Master.

So when Shi Wudu died, it makes sense that it was done by someone Shi Qingxuan depended on as well. It makes sense Shi Qingxuan loses everything. For the first time, he is no longer enabled. He is no longer coddled. He is no longer dependent. He realises he leaned on others more than they leaned on him. He can finally grow and learn. Yes, it is traumatic and, no, trauma does not make someone a better person. Thematically, it makes sense for Shi Qingxuan to go through that.

This is what I mean when I say I like Shi Qingxuan - the character, but dislike Shi Qingxuan - if I came across his pre-fall personality in real life, lol.
